Longhorn Conference
The Longhorn Conference was a junior college athletic conference with member schools located in Texas that operated from 1954 to 1957. The conference was formed on November 23, 1953, at the Rice Hotel in Houston, and eliminated the Big Six Junior College Conference and the South Texas Conference. The conference initially had five members Del Mar College, Kilgore College, Tyler Junior College, Victoria College, and Wharton County Junior College. Del Mar, Victoria, and Wharton had been members of the South Texas Conference while Kilgore and Tyler were members of the Big Six. Tyler left the conference abruptly in September 1957. The Longhorn Conference disbanded in 1958. Del Mar, Victoria, and Wharton joined the Pioneer Conference. Kilgore is a city in Gregg and Rusk counties in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas. Over three-fourths of the city limits is located in Gregg County, the remainder in Rusk County. The population was 12,975 at the 2010 census and 13,376 at the 2020 census. From the age of six, Van Cliburn lived in Kilgore; he became an internationally known classical pianist. Texarkana College
Texarkana College is a public community college in Texarkana, Texas. History Texarkana College was formed in 1927, as a branch of the Texarkana Independent School District, which voted to proceed with plans for establishment of a community college. Its first building was located at the corner of 16th and Pine Streets, and contained classrooms, laboratories, and a gymnasium, the latter two of which were used by both the college and the high school. In 1941, the citizens of Texarkana voted to create a separate Texarkana College District, complete with approval of a $20 Mill rate, mill property tax to fund the District. However, the local school board and the district's Board of Regents would comprise the same individuals until 1957, when the two boards voted to separate. The Texas Eastern Conference (TEC) is a junior college athletic conference with member schools located in Texas. The conference was founded in 1958 with four charter members: Kilgore College, Paris Junior College, Texarkana College, and Tyler Junior College. Kilgore joined after having been a member of the Longhorn Conference and then briefly aligned with the Pioneer Conference. Henderson County Junior College—now known as Trinity Valley Community College—was added to the conference in late 1959, in time to compete in the basketball season that winter.
