''Long Live Père Ubu!'' is an album by the American band Pere Ubu, released in 2009. It is a soundtrack to a musical adaptation of the play from which the band took its name. The band performed its adaptation at (Le) Poisson Rouge. David Thomas referred to ''Long Live Père Ubu!'' as the first "true" punk album to be released in 30 years. Sarah Jane Morris played the part of Ubu's wife. Pere Ubu
Pere Ubu is an American rock group formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1975. The band had a variety of long-term and recurring band members, with singer David Thomas being the only member staying throughout the band's lifetime. They released their debut album ''The Modern Dance'' in 1978 and followed with several more LPs before disbanding in 1982. Thomas reformed the group in 1987, continuing to record and tour until his death in 2025. Describing their sound as "avant-garage," Pere Ubu's work drew inspiration from sources such as musique concrète, 60s rock, performance art, and the industrial environments of the American Midwest. While the band achieved little commercial success, they have exerted a wide influence on subsequent underground music. Sarah Jane Morris (singer)
Sarah Jane Morris (born 21 March 1959) is a British singer of pop, jazz, rock and R&B and a songwriter from Southampton, England. Biography In 1982, Morris joined The Republic as lead singer. A London-based Afro-Caribbean-Latin band, they received enormous publicity from the music press including cover stories with ''NME'' and ''City Limits'' and a documentary for Granada TV. But the band was deemed too political for radio play, with the exception of Capital Radio. The Republic were signed to Charlie Gillett's Oval Records Ltd and released an EP entitled ''Three Songs From The Republic'' and two singles entitled "One Chance" and "My Spies". ''Why I Hate Women'' is the 13th studio album by Pere Ubu, released in 2006. Keith Moliné stepped in for departed longtime guitarist Tom Herman, making this the first Pere Ubu studio album not to feature any of the group's founders (except for David Thomas) either as members or as guests. Explaining the title, Thomas claimed that ''Why I Hate Women'' is a tribute to an imaginary book that Jim Thompson could have written. Production The album's lyrics were inspired by Thomas's love of noir detective fiction. ''Why I Remix Women'', a remix of the album, was made available via mail order and at the band's concerts. David Thomas remixed the album in 2021, retitled it ''Why I Luv Women'' (with the word "Luv" covering the word "Hate" in the style of a red, off-kilter sticker) and first reissued this version as part of the box set ''Nuke The Whales 2006-2014'' in April 2022 through Fire Records. (Le) Poisson Rouge (often referred to as LPR) is a music venue and multimedia art cabaret in New York City founded in 2008 by Justin Kantor and David Handler on the former site of the Village Gate at 158 Bleecker Street. The performance space was designed and engineered by John Storyk/WSDG. David Thomas (musician)
David Lynn Thomas (June 14, 1953 – April 23, 2025) was an American singer, songwriter, musician and poet based in the United Kingdom. He was one of the founding members of the post-punk group Pere Ubu from 1975 to 1982, then 1987 through to his death in 2025, as well as the short-lived proto-punk band Rocket from the Tombs in which he played under the moniker "Crocus Behemoth," previously in 1974 to 1975. He also released several solo albums and collaborative projects. Though primarily a singer, he was an instrumentalist who also occasionally played melodeon, trombone, musette, guitar or other instruments. Thomas had a distinctive, high pitched voice; Emerson Dameron comically described Thomas' singing as "James Stewart trapped in an oboe", and Greil Marcus writes, "Mr Thomas's voice is that of a man muttering in a crowd.
