Lleida Cathedral
The New Cathedral of Lleida (Catalan ''Catedral Nova de Lleida'') or Seu Nova is the seat of the Bishop of Lleida, located in Lleida, Catalonia. History The current cathedral replaced the earlier cathedral, La Seu Vella, Lleida, La Seu Vella, located in the highest point in town, and for a time used as a garrison. The church was constructed in an early Neoclassical architecture, Neoclassical-style in using designs by Pedro Martín Cermeño and construction directed by Francisco Sabatini. The austere building was built with local gray stone, but with a coat of arms of the ruling House of Bourbon. Lleida
Lleida (, ; ; '' see below'') is a city in the west of Catalonia, Spain. It is the capital and largest town in Segrià county, the Ponent region and the province of Lleida. Geographically, it is located in the Catalan Central Depression. It had 140,797 inhabitants . Lleida is one of the oldest towns in Catalonia, with recorded settlements dating back to the Bronze Age period. Until the Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, the area served as a settlement for an Iberian people, the Ilergetes. The town became a municipality, named Ilerda, under the reign of Augustus. It was ruled by Muslims from the 8th century until reconquered in 1149. In 1297, the University of Lleida was founded, becoming the third oldest in the whole of Spain. Francisco Sabatini
Francesco Sabatini (1721 – 19 February 1797), also known as Francisco Sabatini, was an Italian architect who worked in Spain. Biography Born in Palermo, he studied architecture in Rome. His first contacts with the Spanish monarchy was when he participated in the construction of the Palace of Caserta for the King of Naples, Charles VII, the future King Charles III of Spain. When he was raised to the Spanish throne, he called Sabatini to Madrid in 1760, where he was positioned above the most outstanding Spanish architects of the time. He was appointed as Great Master of Royal Works, with the rank of lieutenant colonel at the Engineers Corps, simultaneously designated also as an honorary academician of the Academia Real de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
