Lina Ciobanu
Lina Ciobanu (born 22 March 1929) was a Romanian communist politician. Ciobanu was born in Potcoava, a town in Olt County, the daughter of Gheorghe Năstase and Maria, née Gheorghe. In 1946 she moved to Bucharest, where she worked at a printing house and then at a textile factory, and married Ion Ciobanu. From 1957 to 1960 she was trained by the Romanian Communist Party (PCR) at the Ștefan Gheorghiu Academy and in 1965 she graduated from the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies. In 1965 she became an alternate member of the Central Committee of the PCR, and from 1969 to 1989 she was a full member of the committee. Ciobanu served as Minister of Light Industry from 1975 to 1987, and became a Member of the Politburo in 1977. From 1985 to 1989 she served as deputy for Pașcani in the Great National Assembly and from 1987 to 1989 she was Vice-President of the Council of Ministers. The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes in Romania ( ro, Institutul de Investigare a Crimelor Comunismului în România) is a government-sponsored organization whose mission is to investigate the crimes and abuses conducted while Romania was under communist rule, prior to December 1989. Following the Romanian Revolution, Romania’s Communist government was overthrown and a democratic president was elected in May 1990. Ion Iliescu
Ion Iliescu (; born 3 March 1930) is a Romanian politician and engineer who served as President of Romania from 1989 until 1996 and from 2000 until 2004. Between 1996 and 2000 and also from 2004 to 2008, the year in which he retired, Iliescu was a senator for the Social Democratic Party (PSD), of which he is the founder and honorary president to this day. Iliescu joined the Romanian Communist Party (PCR) in 1953 and became a member of its Central Committee in 1965. Beginning with 1971, he was gradually marginalized by Nicolae Ceaușescu. He had a leading role in the Romanian Revolution, becoming the country's president in December 1989. In May 1990, he became Romania's first freely elected head of state.
