Halfway, South Lanarkshire
Halfway is a largely suburban area in the town of Cambuslang, Scotland, located within the local authority area of South Lanarkshire. It borders the smaller areas of Lightburn, Cairns, Flemington, Drumsagard Village, Drumsagard and Hallside. Halfway is the largest component of the Cambuslang East (ward), Cambuslang East ward of South Lanarkshire Council which has an overall population of around 16,000. History and amenities The district was named in the days of the Glasgow to Hamilton stagecoach when passengers would stop halfway between the destinations to change the horses, have a rest etc. There is a long history of coal mining in the area (especially around Flemington), but no colliery is still in operation. It also has the older name of ''Gilbertfield'', referring to the nearby Gilbertfield Castle, ruined 'castle' of that name (as it is known locally - it is, in fact, a stately home) which still stands to the south. Lightburn & Company Limited was a South Australian engineering and manufacturing company. The founders Albert Henry Lightburn (c. 1877 – 27 October 1940) was a son of Liverpool marine engineer John Bolton Lightburn (c. 1840 – 5 May 1916) and his wife Matilda Lightburn (13 May 1847 – 10 May 1930) who arrived in South Australia from England in 1898 and lived in Athelstone, South Australia, Athelstone until after John's death, when she lived with Albert in Unley. Albert attended fitting and turning classes at the South Australian School of Mines and Industries, School of Mines in 1910. He started a business around 1921 in the backyard of his 42 Arthur Street, Unley home, while running "Unley Motor Garage" as Lightburn & Gardner with William Gleed Gardner at 1 Unley Road, Unley.
