Lesedi Local Municipality
Lesedi Municipality (; ; ) is a local municipality within the Sedibeng District Municipality, in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Heidelberg, Gauteng, Heidelberg is the seat of the municipality. During the first war of independence, Heidelberg served as capital of the South African Republic, from 1880 to 1883. ''Lesedi'' is a Sesotho language, Sesotho word meaning "light". The name was decided upon because the municipality represents the light of the area. Politics The municipal council consists of twenty-six members elected by mixed-member proportional representation. Thirteen councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in thirteen ward (South Africa), wards, while the remaining thirteen are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received. 2021 South African Municipal Elections
The 2021 South African Municipal Elections were held on 1 November 2021, to elect councils for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. It was the 6th municipal election cycle held in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994, with the previous municipal elections having been held in 2016. On 21 April 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the elections to be held on Wednesday, 27 October 2021. It had been recommend by Dikgang Moseneke to delay the municipal elections until 2022. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) requested the Constitutional Court to support the date postponement. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported the date postponement while the Democratic Alliance (DA) was against the postponement of the date. First-past-the-post (FPTP)—also called choose-one, first-preference plurality (FPP), or simply plurality—is a single-winner voting rule.
