Leontoceryx
''Leontoceryx'' is an extinct, little-known genus of pantherine felid. It was named in 1938 by Hungarian palaeontologist Miklós Kretzoi based on a partial upper jaw fossil with only three teeth present. The holotype specimen was originally described in 1916 and assigned to ''Machairodus schlosseri'' by Alexejew, though Otto Zdansky in 1924 expressed doubt as to that identification based on Alexejew's illustration, which lacked the chin ridge seen in ''M. schlosseri'' and did have a groove on the canine tooth characteristic of felines. A second specimen, a single lower canine tooth, was described by Kretzoi in 1951. The Pantherinae is a subfamily of the Felidae; it was named and first described by Reginald Innes Pocock in 1917 as only including the ''Panthera'' species, but later also came to include the clouded leopards (genus ''Neofelis''). The Pantherinae genetically diverged from a common ancestor between and . Characteristics Pantherinae species are characterised by an imperfectly ossified hyoid bone with elastic tendons that enable their larynx to be mobile. They have a flat rhinarium that only barely reaches the dorsal side of the nose. The area between the nostrils is narrow, and not extended sidewards as in the Felinae. Miklós Kretzoi
Miklós Kretzoi (9 February 1907 – 15 March 2005) was a Hungarian people, Hungarian geologist, paleontologist and paleoanthropologist and Széchenyi Prize winner. Exhibition in the Hungarian National Museum, 9 February - 24 May 2004 Kretzoi studied Arts and natural sciences at the then Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Pázmány Péter University, Budapest from 1925 to 1929. While still a student, he worked as a Volunteering, volunteer at the Geological Institute of Hungary. In 1930 he graduated from the University of Pécs with a PhD in Palaeontology, Geology and Geography. In 1933 he commenced work with the "Hungarian-American Oil Inc" as a geologist and geophysicist. He remained at Hungarian-American Oil until the outbreak of the Second World War. Kretzoi moved to the National Museum of Hungary where he was curator of the Mineralogy and Paleontology departments until he began work at the Geological Institute of Hungary in 1950.
