Leirfjorden (Sørfold)
Leirfjorden is a fjord in Leirfjord Municipality and Alstahaug Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The long fjord is located east of the town of Sandnessjøen, between the mainland and the island of Alsta. There is a short strait that connects it to the Vefsnfjorden to the south. There are two bridges that cross it: Helgeland Bridge in the west and Sundøy Bridge in the south. The village of Leland lies on the northern coast and the village of Sundøya lies on the southern coast. Nordland (; , , , ) is one of the three northernmost Counties of Norway, counties in Norway in the Northern Norway region, bordering Troms in the north, Trøndelag in the south, Norrbotten County in Sweden to the east, Västerbotten County to the south-east, and the Atlantic Ocean (Norwegian Sea) to the west. Vefsnfjorden
Vefsnfjorden is a fjord in the traditional district of Helgeland in Nordland county, Norway. It is about long, reaching a maximum depth of about below sea level. The fjord flows through Alstahaug Municipality, Leirfjord Municipality, and Vefsn Municipality. The fjord begins at the island of Tjøtta (south of the island of Alsta). The fjord heads northeast to the village of Sundøya at the northern end of Alsta where a small channel connects to the Leirfjorden. At this point, the fjord turns to the southeast as it proceeds inland to the town of Mosjøen where it ends. The outer part of the fjord is also called ''Sørfjord''. Several large rivers run into the Vefsnfjord, including the Vefsna, Fusta, and Drevja. All the three rivers are traditionally excellent salmon fishing rivers, although they have now been infected with the salmon parasite Gyrodactylus salaris. Sundøya
Sundøya is a village in Leirfjord Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The village is located about south of the village of Leland. Sundøya has a population of about 120 people. It is located on the north side of the Vefsnfjorden on the northeastern part of the island of Alsta, east of the Seven Sisters mountains, which isolate it from the rest of the island. Leland is the administrative centre of Leirfjord Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located on the northern shore of the Leirfjorden along Norwegian County Road 17. The town of Sandnessjøen lies about southwest of Leland. The village of Sundøya lies to the south and the village of Bardal lies to the northeast. Sundøy Bridge
The Sundøy Bridge () is a cantilever bridge in Leirfjord Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The concrete bridge connects the mainland to the village of Sundøya on the island of Alsta. The bridge has three spans, with the main span being long. The maximum clearance to the sea is . The Sundøy Bridge was opened on 9 August 2003. It was designed by Jan-Eirik Nilsskog. The bridge cost . The decision to spend such an amount of money on a bridge to a place with less than 150 inhabitants was disputed. However, Sundøya did not get connected to the mainland when the rest of Alsta did, following the opening of the Helgeland Bridge in 1991. This was because De syv søstre, Seven Sisters mountains separate the two sides of the island with no roads crossing them. A strait is a water body connecting two seas or water basins. Alsta
Alsta is an island in Alstahaug Municipality and Leirfjord Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The island is surrounded by the Vefsnfjorden to the east, the Leirfjorden to the north, and the Alstenfjorden to the south and west. Sandnessjøen is a town and the administrative centre of Alstahaug Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. Sandnessjøen was granted special trading privileges in the late 1600s, but it did not receive town status until 1999.
