Leeds Conservatoire
Leeds Conservatoire (formerly known as The Leeds Music Centre, the City of Leeds College of Music, and Leeds College of Music) is a higher education music conservatoire based in the Quarry Hill district of Leeds, England. It was founded in 1965 by Joseph Stones. Aside from its education provision, which also includes short courses and programmes for adults and school-age musicians, Leeds Conservatoire hosts a seasonal programme of concerts, largely in its 350-seat auditorium 'The Venue'. In 2011, Leeds Conservatoire was awarded All-Steinway School status, becoming the only conservatoire in England to have 90% of its pianos from the Steinway family. Leeds Conservatoire became a wholly owned subsidiary of Leeds City College in August 2011, and is now a member of the Luminate Education Group. Nikki Iles
Nikki Anne Iles (née Burnham; born 16 May 1963) is a British jazz composer, pianist and educator. Early life Iles was born in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, on 16 May 1963. She started her musical education at primary school, where she learnt to play the harmonica and the clarinet, and at eleven years old she won a junior exhibition at the Royal Academy of Music, where she studied clarinet and piano from 1974 to 1981. She became a member of the Bedfordshire Youth Jazz Orchestra. She went on to the Leeds College of Music (1981–1984). Later life and career After graduating from the Leeds College of Music, she decided to settle in Yorkshire. After marrying trumpeter Richard Iles, she changed her surname from Burnham. She joined his band Emanon, with which she played some of her compositions. David Newton (pianist)
David Newton (born 2 February 1958) is a Scottish jazz pianist, composer, arranger and educator. Early life Newton was born in Glasgow on 2 February 1958. He played clarinet, bassoon and piano, and studied piano at Leeds School of Music. Later life and career Newton had a trio in Bradford in 1978 and worked in a theatre in Scarborough. He returned to Scotland in the early 1980s. He gained a reputation as an accompanist to visiting American musicians before launching his own solo career. In 1986, he made his recording debut, with Buddy DeFranco. He moved to London the following year, where he worked with Alan Barnes and toured with Martin Taylor's Quartet (including trip to India) from 1989 to 1991. He was vocalist Carol Kidd's musical director in the 1990s. He also accompanied several other singers. Opera North is an English opera company based in Leeds.
