Denton, Maryland
Denton is a town in Caroline County, Maryland, United States. Its population was 4,418 as of the 2010 United States Census, and it is the county seat of Caroline County. History Denton was established in 1781. It was first called Eden Town, for Sir Sir Robert Eden, 1st Baronet, of Maryland, Robert Eden, the last royal governor of Maryland, and over time, Eden Town was shortened to Denton. The town was incorporated in 1802. The town benefited from trade shipped along the adjacent Choptank River. Shipyards along the river serviced smaller sail and steamships plying their trade on the river, with most traffic flowing down to the larger town of Cambridge, Maryland, Cambridge. The Choptank was deep enough to pose a formidable barrier to enslaved people fleeing north to freedom. Iowa Speedway is a oval short track in Newton, Iowa. Since its inaugural season of racing in 2006, the track has hosted a variety of racing events, including events sanctioned by NASCAR and IndyCar. Stock car racing events in the ARCA Menards Series have been held at Salem Speedway in Salem, Indiana since 1955. The track currently hosts one race for the series, currently known as the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200. History ARCA (then known as MARC) first raced at Salem Speedway in 1955, with Jack Harrison (racing driver), Jack Harrison winning the inaugural race. Unfortunately, during this race, Ray Duhigg was killed when his car flew out of the track in turn 1. From 1955 to 1979, the track became a staple on the ARCA schedule, though it was left off of the series schedule in 1958, 1960, 1961, and 1978. From 1968 to 1974, ARCA held a 500-lap event at the track, named the Salem 500. The event was briefly revived in 1988 and 1989. After 1979, the series did not race at the track from 1980 to 1986. The Columbus Motor Speedway (CMS) was a asphalt oval and figure-eight racing track located south of Columbus, Ohio, within the town limits of Obetz. History In 1945, John Nuckles and Robert Roseberry purchased of land for site of the future race track. The track opened in 1946 as a dirt track for motorcycles. In 1950 the track was given lighting and in 1957, the track was paved for the first time as car racing, specifically stock car racing, became more popular. Robert Roseberry sold his portion to John Nuckles after the paving was complete. The track was run by the Nuckles for many years, and was owned and operated by the Nuckles family.
