The Western Australian Land Information Authority operates under the business name of Landgate. Formerly known as the Department of Land Information (DLI), the Department of Land Administration (DOLA) and the Department of Lands and Surveys (DOLS), it is the statutory authority responsible for property and land information in Western Australia. Western Australian Land Information System
WALIS was established by the Western Australian (WA) Government in 1981. It is responsible for coordinating the discovery of, and access to, location-based or geographic data generated by WA Government agencies. WALIS achieves this through partnerships between organisations, projects, committees and working groups; coordinated through Landgate. History The idea for WALIS began in the late seventies although WALIS was not established until 1981. Since that time there have been many people involved in WALIS, some restructures and many different plans and strategies. Central to WALIS management was the Land Information System Advisory Committee, established as a forum to represent the interests of the public and private sector. Shared Location Information Platform
The Shared Location Information Platform (SLIP) is an open data platform for Western Australia. The aim of SLIP is to improve access to, and use of location data across the public, private and research sectors. SLIP is delivered on behalf of the Government of Western Australia by Landgate; and is supported through a whole-of-government collaboration called WALIS. SLIP is a key component in delivering on the Western Australian Whole-of-Government Open Data Policy (2015), which states that government agencies should make their datasets publicly available. Surveyor General Of Western Australia
The Surveyor General of Western Australia is the person nominally responsible for government surveying in Western Australia. In the early history of Western Australia, the office of surveyor general was one of the most important public offices. The first surveyor general, John Septimus Roe, was responsible for the laying out of many townsites, including Perth and Fremantle, and played a prominent role in the politics of the day. Another surveyor general, John Forrest, became Premier of Western Australia, and later a Cabinet minister in Australia's first federal government. In modern times, the position of surveyor general has diminished in importance. It remains a statutory office, and is housed within the current agency named Landgate.
