Denison Barracks is a British Army installation at Hermitage in Berkshire, England. History The site was used as an American military hospital during the Second World War before becoming the home of Royal School of Military Survey in 1949. The barracks were named after General Sir William Denison, a prominent Royal Engineer. In order to consolidate all survey activities in one location, the rest of the Military Survey organisation moved to the site in the 1960s. 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) were formed at the barracks in 1987. In March 2013, the Ministry of Defence announced a £10 million investment to allow the Military Stabilisation Support Unit, the Defence Cultural Specialist Unit, Land Intelligence Fusion Centre and 15 Psychological Operations Group to move onto the site. Hermitage, Berkshire
Hermitage is a village and civil parish, near Newbury, in the English county of Berkshire. The civil parish is made up of a number of settlements: Hermitage village, Little Hungerford and Wellhouse. Location The village is focused residentially on the B4009, north east of Newbury in the heart of the North Wessex Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is thus surrounded by protected woodlands and undulating fields providing a few elevated viewpoints. 77th Brigade (United Kingdom)
The 77th Brigade is a British Army formation, created in January 2015 by renaming the Security Assistance Group which was created under the Army 2020 concept; A previous 77th Brigade served in World War I. The present brigade's broad purpose is to conduct psychological operations. It is based at Denison Barracks in Hermitage, Berkshire and became operational in April 2015. The original 77th Brigade was formed in 1914 as part of 'Kitchener's Army'. Consisting of Scottish infantry battalions it served with 26th Division on the Salonika Front during World War I. It took part in the disastrous Second Battle of Doiran in 1917, and the equally costly Third Battle of Doiran near the end of the war. Royal School of Military Survey (DCI RSMS) is a joint services survey training facility associated with the Corps of Royal Engineers (RE) but attached to the United Kingdom Defence Intelligence and Security Centre (DISC). History The Royal School of Military Survey (RSMS) originates from 1833 when it was established at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich as a survey training branch. William Denison
Sir William Thomas Denison (3 May 1804 – 19 January 1871) was Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land from 1847 to 1855, Governor of New South Wales from 1855 to 1861, and Governor of Madras from 1861 to 1866. According to Percival Serle, Denison was a man of high character and a good administrator. In his early days in Tasmania he spoke too frankly about the colonists in communications which he regarded as confidential, and this accentuated the feeling against him as a representative of the colonial office during the anti-transportation and responsible government movements. He showed great interest in the life of the colony, and helped to foster education, science and trade, during the period when Tasmania was developing into a prosperous colony. 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) is a Royal Engineers regiment of the British Army. The regiment, formed originally in 1947, provides field deployable geographic services, including geodetic survey, terrain analysis, information management and dissemination and geospatial intelligence (GEOINT). 15 (United Kingdom) Psychological Operations Group was a tri-service, or "purple", military unit formerly parented by 1 Military Intelligence Brigade but from April 2014, part of the Security Assistance Group within the British Army's Force Troops Command.
