Kwun-Lai Ng
Kwun-Lai Ng () (1934-2018) was a former Chinese actress and Cantonese opera singer from Hong Kong. Ng was credited with over 150 films. Early life On January 29, 1934, Ng was born in Shanghai, China. Education Ng studied at Yinzizhong Music Conservatoire and Xiangjiang Cantonese Opera Institute. Career In 1954, Ng established A Branch of Troupe, a Chinese opera group. In 1955, Ng founded the Lai Sing Opera Troupe. Ng is known for her role as a fa dan in Cantonese opera. Ng was a member of opera troupes including Lai Sing Opera Troupe, Fei Fan Heung Opera Troupe and Chung Sun Sing Opera Troupe. In 1955, Ng crossed over as an actress in Hong Kong films. Ng first appeared in The Model and the Car with Yam Kim-fai and Bak Sheut-sin, a 1955 Comedy Cantonese opera film directed by Chan Pei. In 1967, Ng appeared in 10 films. Ng's last film was The Full Moon, a 1967 Drama Film directed by Kwan Chi-Kin. In 1967, Ng retired from the film industry. Ng is credited with over 150 films. ... Cantonese opera is one of the major categories in Chinese opera, originating in southern China's Guangdong Province. It is popular in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, Macau and among Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. Like all versions of Chinese opera, it is a traditional Chinese art form, involving music, singing, martial arts, acrobatics, and acting. History There is debate about the origins of Cantonese opera, but it is generally accepted that opera was brought from the northern part of China and slowly migrated to the southern province of Guangdong in the late 13th century, during the late Southern Song dynasty. Yam Kim-fai
Yam Kim-fai (, 4 February 1913 (Lunar 29 December 1912 – 29 November 1989), also known as Ren Jianhui was a renowned Cantonese opera actress in China and Hong Kong. Yam was most notable for her unique ability to sing in the lower register. That her opera voice was indistinguishable from a male one allowed her to play either male or female roles, though she usually performed male ones. On 24 June 1972, Yam performed for the last time in public and TV viewers looked for the "man" they knew from movies/stage performances. They did not expect to see her in a 2-piece set of jacket and qipao (cheongsam) with floral print. Bak Sheut-sin
Bak Sheut-sin (born 19 May 1928 in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China), also known as Bai Xuexian, is a former Chinese opera actress in China and Hong Kong. Career Bak is notable for pairing up with fellow Cantonese opera star Yam Kim Fai. Two of her major works are ''The Peony Pavilion'' and '' Tai Nui Fa''. She has received awards from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Hong Kong University for her contribution to the opera art form. In April 2001 she received a ''"Lifetime achievement award"'' from the Hong Kong Film Awards from Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan. Awarded Gold Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong Government in 2013.
