''Puppets'' (russian: Куклы, lit. "''dolls''") was a weekly Russian TV show of political satire, produced by Vasily Grigoryev and shown on Saturdays on the TV channel NTV. It used puppets to represent celebrities, mainly the major politicians. It was inspired by the French show Les Guignols de l'info. The show was well loved in Russia and has inspired spinoffs in other countries. President Vladimir Putin was frequently represented in the show. Closure During parliamentary elections in 1999 and presidential elections in 2000, NTV was critical of the Second Chechen War, Vladimir Putin and the political party Unity backed by him. In the puppet show ''Puppets'' in the beginning of February 2000, the puppet of Putin acted as Little Zaches in a story based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's ''Little Zaches Called Cinnabar'', in which blindness causes villagers to mistake an evil gnome for a beautiful youth. This provoked a fierce reaction from Putin's supporters. NTV (Russia)
NTV (Cyrillic: НТВ) is a Russian free-to-air television channel that was launched as a subsidiary of Vladimir Gusinsky's company . Since 14 April 2001 Gazprom Media controls the network. NTV has no official meaning according to Igor Malashenko, the author of the name and co-founder of the company, but in the 1990s unofficial transcripts of the acronym include "New" (''Novoje''), "Independent" (''Nezavisimoje''), "Non-governmental" (''Negosudarstvennoje''), "Our" (''Nashe''). ''Les Guignols'' (, ''The Puppets''), formerly ''Les Guignols de l'info'' (, ''The News Puppets''), was a daily satirical latex puppet show broadcast on the French television channel Canal+. It was created in 1988, inspired by '' Le Bébête Show'' (1982–95) and for the puppets form by the British ''Spitting Image'' (1984–96). Using the same structure as a news programme, the show satirized the political world, media, celebrities, French society, and international events. Throughout the years, it usually aired at 7:50 p.m. as a segment of other Canal+ shows, such as or '' Le Grand Journal.'' ''Spitting Image'' is a British satirical television puppet show, created by Peter Fluck, Roger Law and Martin Lambie-Nairn. First broadcast in 1984, the series was produced by 'Spitting Image Productions' for Central Independent Television over 18 series which aired on the ITV network.
