Ko Hsiang-ting
Ko Hsiang-ting (; 8 August 1916 – 16 May 2010) was a Taiwanese actor. Born in Suzhou, China on 8 August 1916, Ko became a member of the National Revolutionary Army corp of entertainers. He moved to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War, and started an acting career that spanned over one hundred credits. He was awarded the Golden Horse Award for Best Actor in 1965 and again in 1970. Eight years later, Ko founded the Actor’s Union of the Republic of China. In 2005, he was honored with the Golden Horse Award Lifetime Achievement Award. He died in Taipei on 16 May 2010, aged 93. Suzhou (; ; Suzhounese: ''sou¹ tseu¹'' , Mandarin: ), alternately romanized as Soochow, is a major city in southern Jiangsu province, East China. Suzhou is the largest city in Jiangsu, and a major economic center and focal point of trade and commerce. ''Temptress Moon'' is a 1996 Chinese film directed by Chen Kaige. It was jointly produced by the Shanghai Film Studio and the Taipei-based Tomson Films. The film saw Chen reuniting with Leslie Cheung and Gong Li who had previously worked with him in his breakout international hit '' Farewell My Concubine''. Ye Zhaoyan's novel ''A Flower's Shade'' was believed to be the basis for the film, although Ye was not credited in the film. ''Temptress Moon'' premiered at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, where it was in competition for the Palme d'Or that eventually went to Mike Leigh's '' Secrets & Lies''. ''The Opium War'' (鸦片战争) is a 1997 Chinese historical epic film directed by Xie Jin. The winner of the 1997 Golden Rooster and 1998 Hundred Flowers Awards for Best Picture, the film was screened in several international film festivals, notably Cannes and Montreal. The film tells the story of the First Opium War of 1839–1842, which was fought between the Qing Empire of China and the British Empire, from the perspectives of key figures such as the Chinese viceroy Lin Zexu and the British naval diplomat Charles Elliot. Unlike many of its contemporaries, ''The Opium War'' was strongly supported by the state apparatus. ''If I Were for Real'' () is a 1981 Taiwanese drama film directed by Wang Toon. It is an adaptation of the 1979 play of the same name by Sha Yexin, Li Shoucheng and Yao Mingde, set in mainland China. National Revolutionary Army
The National Revolutionary Army (NRA; ), sometimes shortened to Revolutionary Army () before 1928, and as National Army () after 1928, was the military arm of the Kuomintang (KMT, or the Chinese Nationalist Party) from 1925 until 1947 in China. It also became the regular army of the Republican era during the KMT's period of party rule beginning in 1928. It was renamed the Republic of China Armed Forces after the 1947 Constitution, which instituted civilian control of the military.
