Kern Wayne Dunagan
Kern Wayne Dunagan (February 20, 1934 – December 27, 1991) was a United States Army officer and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War. Biography Dunagan joined the Army from Los Angeles, California, and by May 13, 1969, was serving as a captain in Company A, 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, Americal Division. During a firefight starting on May 12 and finally ending on May 14, 1969, in Quang Tin Province, Republic of Vietnam, Dunagan showed conspicuous leadership as he organized his men and rescued wounded soldiers despite his own serious wounds. Dunagan was wounded on two occasions during this ferocious battle, fought four kilometers west of his battalion's firebase at LZ Professional. Superior, Arizona
Superior ( Western Apache: Yooʼ Łigai) is a town in Pinal County, Arizona. According to the 2020 census, the population of the town is 2,407. Superior was founded as a mining town for the Silver King and the later Magma mines; silver was mined at first, and then transitioned to copper. Currently, exploitation of the huge Resolution Copper deposit is being explored. History Like nearby Globe, Ray, and Clifton, Arizona, Superior was once part of a huge Apache reservation, but after silver and copper deposits were discovered, those areas were withdrawn from the reservation and returned to the public domain. Landing Zone Professional
Landing Zone Professional (also known as FSB Professional or Hill 185) is a former U.S. Army base northwest of Chu Lai, Quang Tin Province, Vietnam. History The base was established in 1968 by the 23rd Infantry Division and was located approximately 32 km northwest of Chu Lai and 16 km southwest of Landing Zone East. The base was occupied by elements of the 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment and 1st Battalion, 14th Artillery when it was attacked by the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) V-16 Sapper Battalion on the early morning of 12 May 1969. Following the sapper attack the PAVN continued to mortar the base and set up heavy machine guns to prevent helicopter support. The Medal of Honor was created during the American Civil War and is the highest military decoration presented by the United States government to a member of its armed forces. The recipients must have distinguished themselves at the risk of their own life above and beyond the call of duty in action against an enemy of the United States. Due to the nature of this medal, it is commonly presented posthumously. The Vietnam War, (also known as the Second Indochina War, Vietnam Conflict, and in Vietnam as the American War), took place from 1955 to 1975. The war was fought between the Communist-supported Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the United States-supported Republic of Vietnam, beginning with the presence of a small number of US military advisors in 1955 and escalating into direct US involvement in a ground war in 1965.
