Kathryn Tucker Windham
Kathryn Tucker Windham (née Tucker, June 2, 1918 – June 12, 2011) was an American storyteller, author, photographer, folklorist, and journalist. She was born in Selma, Alabama, and grew up in nearby Thomasville. Tucker got her first writing job at the age of 12, reviewing movies for her cousin's small town newspaper, ''The Thomasville Times''. She earned a B.A. degree from Huntingdon College in 1939. Soon after graduating she became the first woman journalist for the ''Alabama Journal''. Starting in 1944, she worked for ''The Birmingham News''. In 1946 she married Amasa Benjamin Windham, with whom she had three children. Kathryn Tickell, OBE, DL (born 8 June 1967) is an English musician, noted for playing the Northumbrian smallpipes and fiddle. Music career Early life Kathryn Tickell was born in Walsall, then in Staffordshire, to parents who originated from Northumberland and who moved back there with the family when Kathryn was seven. Her paternal grandfather played accordion, fiddle, and organ. Her father, Mike Tickell, sang and her mother played the concertina. Her first instrument was piano when she was six. A year later, she picked up a set of Northumbrian smallpipes brought home by her father, who intended them for someone else. Early career Roberts' first released recordings were on the album ''Intuition'', a collection of songs by various South Yorkshire folk artists which also included her friend Kate Rusby. Roberts went on to record the critically acclaimed album ''Kate Rusby & Kathryn Roberts'' with her in 1995, which was voted Album of the Year by '' fRoots'' magazine.
