Karrinyup Road is a major east-west arterial road in the inner northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, connecting the City of Stirling council offices, Osborne Park Hospital and Karrinyup Shopping Centre with residential estates in Innaloo, Stirling and Balcatta. Karrinyup Shopping Centre
Karrinyup Shopping Centre is a shopping centre built in 1973 in Karrinyup, a suburb of Perth. After an $800 million redevelopment, the centre is one of the largest shopping centres in Western Australia. Centre history Prior to the current centre being built, a smaller Karrinyup Shopping Centre was constructed in 1964 on a corner site. This was built as the precursor to a larger centre expected to be constructed in the future. The original centre was constructed by LJ Wallis of Osborne Park and owned by Karrinyup Investments of Scarborough. Valued at £12,500 (1964), it consisted of a grocer, greengrocer, deli, butcher, chemist, hairdresser, draper, news agent, post office, bank agency, and parking for 100 cars. During the latter part of the 1960s, the Metropolitan Regional Planning Authority developed the ''Corridor Plan for Perth'', which was published and adopted in 1970. North Beach Road
North Beach Road is a distributor road in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, running from Gwelup to North Beach. It is mostly a two-lane divided carriageway. The central section of the road, from Reid Highway to Erindale Road, is part of State Route 77. The route continues along Erindale Road, while North Beach Road heads south to Karrinyup Road. While the road today is minor, discontinuous and choked by roundabouts and other traffic-calming devices, it was previously one of the first major roads in the area, originally built as a plank road serving tourists and holidaymakers staying in North Beach over the summer. Gwelup, Western Australia
Gwelup is a suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia 12 km north of Perth's central business district (CBD) along the Mitchell Freeway. Its local government area is the City of Stirling. History and environment The name "Gwelup" refers to a small swamp located within the southern portion of the suburb. It was derived from the Noongar word "Gwelgannow" meaning "to shift position". Hence, Lake Gwelup was referred to as "the lake that shifts position". The name first appears in Lands Department records in 1878 as "Gwelup Swamp". Situated on the western side of the suburb of Gwelup, lies the remainder of the once broader Lake Gwelup and accompanying bushland nature reserve. Karrinyup is a suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, and is located 12 km north of Perth's central business district. Its local government area is the City of Stirling. History The name Karrinyup was originally derived from the word ''Careniup'', a Noongar name for a nearby swamp, an Aboriginal word apparently meaning "the place where bush kangaroos graze". The City covers an area of and has a population of over 223,000, making it the largest local government area by population in Western Australia. West Coast Drive
West Coast Drive is a scenic north-south route along the Indian Ocean in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. History The road was initially a street which formed part of North Beach, which from the 1920s onwards was a coastal village which served as a holiday destination for Perth residents. During the Great Depression a tent city was located at the North Beach Road intersection. The road had to navigate around the original Hamersley family residence at Beachton Street, but this was demolished in 1961 under Town Planning Scheme No.14 which was drafted in 1959 by the Shire of Perth in order that the road could be straightened. In 1967, the road was extended north to the newly built Sacred Heart College, Sorrento. Before 1985, West Coast Drive was part of West Coast Highway and connected through to Scarborough.
