KYYW
KYYW (1470 AM) is a news/talk radio station that serves the Abilene, Texas, area. The station is under ownership of Townsquare Media. History The station went on air in 1938 on a local channel. Its former callsign KRBC was made up of the first letters of Reporter Broadcasting Company (RBC). RBC was an affiliate of the ''Abilene Reporter-News'' newspaper. In late 1940s, the station changed frequencies to 1470 with 5,000 watts days and 1,000 watts at night using a three tower directional antenna located north of Abilene. Studios were in a downtown hotel for many years. KRBC radio later moved in with KRBC-TV (channel 9) on south 14th street. KRBC was spun off to some of its shareholders (members of the Fox family) in 1986. They later acquired an FM in nearby Merkel, Texas, which is today's KHXS (102.7). KSLI (AM)
KSLI (1280 AM, "92.5 The Ranch" is an AM radio station that serves the Abilene, Texas, area. The station is owned by Townsquare Media and airs a Red Dirt/Texas Country music format, simulcasting KMWX 92.5 FM Abilene. On Monday, March 1, 2010, the news/talk format on KSLI moved to sister station KYYW. KSLI then began broadcasting the classic country format that had been on KYYW. On Monday, February 10, 2020 KSLI transitioned from a classic country music format to a red dirt/Texas country music format. 1280 KSLI still airs Abilene Wylie High School basketball, baseball and softball games, and is affiliated with Texas Farm Bureau. KRBC-TV (channel 9) is a television station in Abilene, Texas, United States, affiliated with NBC. It is owned by Mission Broadcasting, which maintains joint sales and shared services agreements (JSA/SSA) with Nexstar Media Group, owner of dual CBS/Telemundo affiliate KTAB-TV (channel 32), for the provision of certain services. The two stations share studios on South 14th Street in western Abilene; KRBC-TV's transmitter is located on Texas State Highway 36 in neighboring Callahan County. KHXS (102.7 FM, "102 The Bear") is an FM radio station playing classic rock music. It serves the area of Abilene, Texas, United States. The station is under ownership of Cumulus Media. History On April 3, 1978, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted the Big Country Broadcasting Company, owned by Gaylon Christi and Ted Connell, a construction permit to build an FM radio station on 102.3 MHz in Merkel, where the two owned KBGG (1500 AM). The station began May 3, 1982, as KMIO-FM. KBGG became KMIO and primarily simulcast the new FM's format of beautiful music and adult standards. The change came ahead of a sale of both properties in 1983 to Bob Hanna, a Dallas media broker. The station had flipped to country by the time the simulcast was broken up in October 1983. KEYJ-FM currently airs a mainstream rock radio format, format branded as "Rock 108" successfully blending "the best of the old and the new." Abilene ( ) is a city in Taylor and Jones Counties in Texas, United States. Its population was 125,182 at the 2020 census, making it the 27th-most populous city in the state of Texas. ''Abilene Reporter-News'' is a daily newspaper based in Abilene, Texas, United States. The newspaper started publishing as the weekly ''Abilene Reporter'', helmed by Charles Edwin Gilbert on June 17, 1881, just three months after Abilene was founded. It is hence the oldest continuous business in the city. It became a daily newspaper in 1885. History Two months after starting the paper, a fire destroyed several buildings in Abilene, including Gilbert's office. He rode the train 21 miles east to Baird and used a borrowed printing press to produce an extra edition on the fire. Two other Abilene papers began publication in the 1880s.
