Kurt Burris
Kurt Burris (June 27, 1932 – July 21, 1999) was an American gridiron football center. He played college football at Oklahoma, where he was an All-American and finished second in the 1954 Heisman Trophy balloting. In 2000, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Burris was selected in the 1955 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, but he went to the Canadian Football League, where he played for five seasons. Burris had five brothers who also played football at Oklahoma, including three time All-American Paul "Buddy" Burris. Nowata, Oklahoma
Nowata (Lenape: ', ' ) is a city and county seat of Nowata County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,731 at the United States Census, 2010, a 6.0 percent decline from the figure of 3,971 recorded in 2000. The area where it was established was then part of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. History The first community established at this site was named Metz, named for its first postmaster, Fred Metzner. The name was changed even before the railroad was built in 1889. In the Cherokee language, the town is called ᎠᎹᏗᎧᏂᎬᎬ (''A-ma-di-ka-ni-gunh-gunh'', roughly), which means, "water is all gone," translating what it ''sounded'' like the word meant: No Water. In 1889, the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway (later part of the Missouri Pacific Railway) built a line through Nowata. A post office was established in the town on November 8, 1889. Buddy Burris
Paul "Buddy" Burris (January 20, 1923 – November 26, 2007) was an American football player. He played college football for the Golden Hurricane at University of Tulsa, and after a hiatus to serve in the Second World War, for the Sooners at the University of Oklahoma. Burris was the first Oklahoma player to earn All-America honors in three years. After college, he played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) for three years with the Green Bay Packers. Early years Burris was born on January 20, 1923, in Nowata, Oklahoma.
