Klaus Schmitt
Klaus Schmitt (born 1940 in Rimbach/Odenwald, Germany) is an American mathematician doing research in nonlinear differential equations, and nonlinear analysis. Schmitt completed the Abitur at Rimbach's Martin-Luther-Schule in 1960. He received a BA in mathematics and physics from St. Olaf College in 1962, an MA (1964) and PhD in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1967. He began his 43-year career at the University of Utah in 1967, first as assistant, then associate, then as full professor of mathematics. He also served as chairman of the department of mathematics from 1989 to 1992. Jean Mawhin
Jean L. Mawhin (born 11 December 1942 in Verviers) is a Belgian mathematician and historian of mathematics. Mawhin received his PhD in 1969 (''Le problème des solutions périodiques en mécanique non linéaire'') under Paul Ledoux at the University of Liège, where he had studied since 1962 and received his licentiate in mathematics in 1964. He was assistant professor at Liège from 1964 and maitre de conferences (lecturer) from 1969 to 1973. From 1970 he was assistant professor (chargé de cours) and from 1974 professor of mathematics at the Université catholique de Louvain (with full professorship from 1977). In 2008 he retired. Edward Norman Dancer FAA (born 29 December 1946, Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia) is an Australian mathematician, specializing in nonlinear analysis. Dancer received in 1969 a Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc (Hons)) from the Australian National University and in 1972 a PhD from the University of Cambridge with thesis advisor Frank Smithies and thesis ''Bifurcation in Banach Spaces''. As a postdoc Dancer was from 1971 to 1972 at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK and from 1972 to 1973 at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the Australian National University. At the University of New England in New South Wales, he was from 1973 to 1975 a lecturer, from 1976 to 1981 a senior lecturer, from 1981 to 1987 an associate professor, and from 1987 to 1993 a full professor. Heinz-Otto Peitgen
Heinz-Otto Peitgen (born April 30, 1945 in Bruch, Nümbrecht near Cologne) is a German mathematician and was President of Jacobs University from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013. Peitgen contributed to the study of fractals, chaos theory, and medical image computing, as well as helping to introduce fractals to the broader public. Life Peitgen studied mathematics, physics and economics from 1965 until 1971 in Bonn, where he received his PhD in 1973. His doctoral dissertation was entitled “Asymptotische Fixpunktsätze und Stabilität” (English: “Asymptotic Fixed-point Theorems and Stability”). After receiving his habilitation in 1977, he was awarded a professorship in mathematics at the University of Bremen, where he served until 2012. Humboldt Prize
The Humboldt Prize, the Humboldt-Forschungspreis in German, also known as the Humboldt Research Award, is an award given by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany to internationally renowned scientists and scholars who work outside of Germany in recognition of their lifetime's research achievements. Recipients are "academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge academic achievements in the future". Shiing-Shen Chern (; , ; October 28, 1911 – December 3, 2004) was a Chinese-American mathematician and poet. He made fundamental contributions to differential geometry and topology. He has been called the "father of modern differential geometry" and is widely regarded as a leader in geometry and one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century, winning numerous awards and recognition including the Wolf Prize and the inaugural Shaw Prize.
