Khan (band)
Khan were an English progressive rock band of the Canterbury Scene during 1971-1972. Formed by Steve Hillage from Uriel (band), Uriel, the initial line-up was Steve Hillage (guitar), Nick Greenwood (bass guitar, from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (band), The Crazy World of Arthur Brown), Dick Heninghem (organ) and Pip Pyle (percussion). Pyle quickly moved on to Gong (band), Gong and by the time the band played its first gig in June 1971 he had been replaced by Eric Peachey. In October 1971, Dick Heninghem left as well, replaced by Dave Stewart (musician, born 1950), Dave Stewart for the duration of the album sessions. The album ''Space Shanty'' was released in June 1972, followed by a UK tour supporting Caravan (band), Caravan, for which Canadian organist Val Stevens joined. Fish Rising
''Fish Rising'' is the debut solo album by English progressive rock musician Steve Hillage, released by Virgin Records in April 1975 in music, 1975. It was recorded just prior to Hillage's departure from the band Gong (band), Gong. Background Steve Hillage had recorded the album ''Space Shanty'' with Khan in 1972, for which Hillage had composed all the songs. He was writing material for a second Khan album when the band split up. After joining Kevin Ayers' band for a few months, he was offered a position in Gong (band), Gong at the end of 1972. At this same time, the newly formed Virgin Records approached Hillage about recording a solo album for the label; however, he told them he wanted to see how he would fare in Gong, and that he would approach Virgin again when he felt ready to do a solo project. Nigel Griggs
Nigel Griggs (born 18 August 1949) is an English musician. He is perhaps best known for having played bass guitar in the band Split Enz. He is the brother of Paul Griggs from the 1970s vocal group Guys 'n' Dolls. Biography A professional musician since 1963, Griggs has played in a number of bands, notably The Cortinas and Octopus, 1963–1971, with his brother Paul Griggs. Nigel Griggs joined Split Enz in 1977 at the same time Neil Finn did, at the recommendation of the drummer at that time and close friend of Griggs, Malcolm Green. Griggs stayed with the Enz until their 1984 split. His songwriting credits with the band include " Dirty Creature", co-written with Neil Finn and Tim Finn. Kevin Ayers
Kevin Ayers (16 August 1944 – 18 February 2013) was an English singer-songwriter who was active in the English psychedelic music movement. Ayers was a founding member of the psychedelic band Soft Machine in the mid-1960s, and was closely associated with the Canterbury scene. He recorded a series of albums as a solo artist and over the years worked with Brian Eno, Syd Barrett, Bridget St John, John Cale, Elton John, Robert Wyatt, Andy Summers, Mike Oldfield, Nico and Ollie Halsall, among others. After living for many years in Deià, Mallorca, he returned to the United Kingdom in the mid-1990s before moving to the south of France. His last album, ''The Unfairground'', was released in 2007. Caravan (band)
Caravan are an English rock band from the Canterbury area, founded by former Wilde Flowers members David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings, and Richard Coughlan in 1968. The band have never achieved the great commercial success that was widely predicted for them at the beginning of their career, but are nevertheless considered a key part of the Canterbury scene of progressive rock acts, blending psychedelic rock, jazz, and classical influences to create a distinctive sound. The band were originally based in Whitstable, Kent, near Canterbury, but moved to London when briefly signed to Verve Records. After being dropped by Verve, the band signed to Decca Records, where they released their most critically acclaimed album, '' In the Land of Grey and Pink'', in 1971. Dave Stewart (musician, Born 1950)
David Lloyd Stewart (born 30 December 1950) is an English musician known for his work with the progressive rock bands Uriel, Egg, Khan, Hatfield and the North, National Health, and Bruford. Stewart is the author of two books on music theory and wrote a music column for ''Keyboard'' ''Magazine'' (USA) for thirteen years. He has also composed music for TV, film and radio, much of it for Victor Lewis-Smith's production company. He has worked with singer Barbara Gaskin since 1981. Progressive Rock
Progressive rock (shortened as prog rock or simply prog) is a broad genre of rock music that primarily developed in the United Kingdom through the mid- to late 1960s, peaking in the early-to-mid-1970s. Gong (band)
Gong are a psychedelic rock band that incorporates elements of jazz and space rock into their musical style. The group was formed in Paris in 1967 by Australian musician Daevid Allen and English vocalist Gilli Smyth. Band members have included Didier Malherbe, Pip Pyle, Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett, Tim Blake, Pierre Moerlen, Bill Laswell and Theo Travis. Others who have played on stage with Gong include Don Cherry, Chris Cutler, Bill Bruford, Brian Davison, Dave Stewart and Tatsuya Yoshida. Pip Pyle
Phillip "Pip" Pyle (4 April 1950 – 28 August 2006) was an English-born drummer from Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, who later resided in France. He is best known for his work in the Canterbury scene bands Gong, Hatfield and the North and National Health.
