Kenora Islanders
The Kenora Islanders are a junior ice hockey team in the Superior International Junior Hockey League based in Kenora, Ontario. The team debuted as an expansion team in the 2023–24 SIJHL season. Team identity The name ''Kenora Islanders'' refers to the city's proximity to the Lake of the Woods and its many islands. The club also considered calling itself the ''Kenora Thistles'' after the 1907 Stanley Cup championship team that hailed from Kenora, and the present-day minor hockey club of the same name. Arena Where the team plays its home games has been a point of contention in the local community. The two public arenas in Kenora have been in high demand since before the Islanders existed. Prior to the team's inaugural season, the City of Kenora announced that the team could not be accommodated at either of its arenas due to competing demands and concerns raised by community groups and other users of the facilities. Kenora, Ontario
Kenora (), previously named Rat Portage (french: Portage-aux-Rats), is a city situated on the Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada, close to the Manitoba boundary, and about east of Winnipeg by road. It is the seat of Kenora District. The history of the name extends beyond the time of white settlers arriving in the region. The name Rat Portage had its origin in the Ojibwa name Waszush Onigum, which roughly translated, means portage to the country of the muskrats. A shortened and somewhat corrupted version, Rat Portage, was adopted by the Hudson’s Bay Company in naming their post, then located on Old Fort Island on the Winnipeg River. When the post was moved to the mainland and a town grew up around it, the name Rat Portage was assumed by the community. Vermillion Bay, Ontario
Vermilion Bay is an unincorporated community on Vermilion Bay on Eagle Lake in the township of Machin, Kenora District in northwestern Ontario, Canada. It is located on Ontario Highway 17 (Trans-Canada Highway) between the cities of Kenora to the west and Dryden to the east. History Archives of the Hudson's Bay Company , which had a post on Eagle Lake, refer to Vermilion Station on the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1881, Vermilion Bay was a construction camp where railway workers were based. In 1902, Vermilion Bay station was used to send material to the ongoing construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (later to become part of Canadian National Railway). In 1903, a one-room school was built, and the township was first surveyed in 1906. Kaden is an ''Ortsgemeinde'' – a community belonging to a ''Verbandsgemeinde'' – in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The Kam River Fighting Walleye is a junior ice hockey team in the Superior International Junior Hockey League, SIJHL based in Oliver Paipoonge, Oliver Paipoonge, Ontario. The 2024–25 SIJHL season is the 23rd season of the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL). League changes The Wisconsin Lumberjacks relocated from Spooner, Wisconsin, to Ironwood, Michigan, and were renamed the Ironwood Lumberjacks.
