Kenneth Rowe (22 December 1924 – 5 July 2014) was a British philatelist who in 1995 was invited to sign the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (RDP) is a Philately, philatelic award of international scale, created by the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in 1921 to honour those who have advanced philately through research, expertise, or service. .... He was a specialist in the history of forwarding agents, intermediaries who facilitated the routing of international mail before the development of the modern postal system. Philately
Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. While closely associated with stamp collecting and the study of postage, it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Herpin stated that stamps had been collected and studied for the previous six or seven years and a better name was required for the new hobby than ''timbromanie'' (roughly "stamp mania"), which was disliked.Williams, L.N. & M. Roll Of Distinguished Philatelists
The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (RDP) is a Philately, philatelic award of international scale, created by the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in 1921 to honour those who have advanced philately through research, expertise, or service. The Roll consists of five pieces of parchment to which the signatories add their names. New honorees continue to be added annually. Selection of the signatories Those who have assisted the development of philately through their research, expertise or giving their time can be candidates to sign the Roll if they are sponsored by one of the existing signatories. GSM is published by the famous stamps and collectables firm of Stanley Gibbons and each issue includes updates to their various catalogues. A forwarding agent was an intermediary who facilitated the routing of international mail before the development of the modern postal system. A forwarding agent's cachet is "A strike or endorsement applied to a letter to indicate that it had been handled in transit by means other than the Postal Service." Their markings are distinguished, and can be a collectible. History In the early days of postal communications it was often necessary for international mail to pass through a number of hands before reaching its eventual destination.
