Kelly Groucutt
Kelly Groucutt (born Michael William Groucutt; 8 September 1945 – 19 February 2009) was an English musician best known as the bassist and secondary vocalist for the rock band Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) between 1974 and 1982. Early career Groucutt was born in Coseley, West Midlands. He began his musical career at 15 as Rikki Storm of Rikki Storm and the Falcons. He sang with multiple outfits during the 1960s, picking up the guitar as he went along. Groucutt was also a member of a band called "Sight and Sound", and later with a band called "Barefoot". Electric Light Orchestra While playing with Barefoot in Birmingham, he was spotted by ELO's Jeff Lynne; and after Lynne, Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy had watched him play, he was invited to join ELO, to replace Mike de Albuquerque, who had recently left the band. Coseley ( ) is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, Dudley district, in the county of the West Midlands (county), West Midlands, England. It is situated north of Dudley itself, on the border with Wolverhampton and Sandwell. Mike de Albuquerque (born 24 June 1947, Wimbledon, Surrey) is an English musician, who was a member of the progressive rock band Electric Light Orchestra from 1972 to 1974. Biography In 1971, in partnership with percussionist Frank Ricotti, Albuquerque released the jazz-rock album ''First Wind''. Under the name 'Ricotti and Albuquerque', the band featured Albuquerque on guitar and vocals and Ricotti on vibraphone, alto saxophone and percussion, with Trevor Tomkins on drums, Chris Laurence on electric and acoustic bass and John Taylor on electric piano, supplemented by Michael Keen and Henry Lowther on trumpet. Between 1972 and 1974, he was the bassist and secondary vocalist for Electric Light Orchestra. ''Secret Messages'' is the tenth studio album by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), released in 1983 on Jet Records. It was the last ELO album with bass guitarist Kelly Groucutt, conductor Louis Clark and a full orchestra, and the last ELO album to be released on the Jet label. It was also the final ELO studio album to become a worldwide top 40 hit upon release. Original concept ''Secret Messages'', as its title suggests, is littered with hidden messages in the form of backmasking, some obvious and others less so. ''Time'' is the ninth studio album by English rock music, rock band Electric Light Orchestra (credited as ELO), released in July 1981 on Jet Records. It is a concept album about a man from the 1980s who is taken to the year 2095, where he is confronted by the dichotomy between technological advancement and a longing for past romance. The record topped the UK Albums Chart for two weeks, though it attracted mixed reviews for its heavy use of synthesizers and stylistic shift away from the progressive rock, orchestral rock of previous ELO albums. ''Xanadu'' is the soundtrack to the 1980 musical film of the same name, featuring the Australian singer Olivia Newton-John and the British group Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). It was released in June 1980 on MCA Records in the United States and July 1980 by Jet Records in the United Kingdom. The original LP release featured on side one the songs of Newton-John, and on side two the songs of ELO. In 2008 the soundtrack album was digitally remastered as a bonus CD as part of the film's DVD release titled ''Xanadu: Magical Musical Edition''. "Rockaria!" is a song by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), written by Jeff Lynne. It was the third track on the band's successful 1976 album ''A New World Record'', and was the second single from the album. On some CD pressings of ''A New World Record'', the title appears without the exclamation mark. Lyrics The chorus references Wagner, Beethoven, Puccini and Verdi, while the final verse mentions Chuck Berry. Recording The operatic voice of Mary Thomas is featured on the track, particularly during the introduction. On the first take of the song, Thomas mistakenly began the vocal too early. However, Lynne elected to use that take, complete with her interjection, "Oops!", although the interjection is omitted from some later pressings of the album. "The Diary of Horace Wimp" is the fourth track on the Electric Light Orchestra album ''Discovery'', written by Jeff Lynne. Released in July 1979 as a single, the song is Beatlesque in nature and became a Top Ten hit in the UK and Ireland. The lyrics describe a week in the life of a repressed man named Horace who wants to express his affection towards a woman he meets, and overcomes his shy nature with the help of " a voice from above."
