Kath Walker (scientist)
Kathleen Joy Walker is a New Zealand conservation scientist and an expert on New Zealand snails. In 2023 Walker was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to wildlife conservation. Conservation career Walker joined the New Zealand Wildlife Service in 1981, and then worked for the Department of Conservation. Walker led the establishment of the Rotoiti Mainland Island sanctuary, and the creation of bird sanctuaries at Motuara and Chetwode Islands through the eradication of rodent pests. Walker is an expert on New Zealand's native snails, the giant carnivorous Powelliphanta. She conducted a national survey of the snails, and discovered a new species on Stockton Plateau, ''Powelliphanta augusta''. She assisted in the efforts to maintain the snail populations in fridges once their habitat was destroyed by mining, and advocated for the restoration of their habitat. The New Zealand Order of Merit () is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system. It was established by royal warrant (document), royal warrant on 30 May 1996 by Elizabeth II, Monarchy of New Zealand, Queen of New Zealand, "for those persons who in any field of endeavour, have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions or other merits", to recognise outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity. In the New Zealand order of precedence, order of precedence, the New Zealand Order of Merit ranks immediately after the Order of New Zealand. Massey University () is a Public university, public research university in New Zealand that provides internal and distance education. The university has campuses in Auckland, Palmerston North, and Wellington. Data from Universities New Zealand shows that in 2024 the university had approximately 26,505 students enrolled, making it the country's second-largest university. Antipodean Albatross
The Antipodean albatross (''Diomedea antipodensis'') () is a large seabird in the albatross family. Antipodean albatrosses are smaller than snowy albatrosses, and breed in predominantly brown plumage, but are otherwise difficult to distinguish from young snowy albatrosses (snowy albatrosses grow lighter in color with age, while the Antipodean stays darker). Etymology ''Diomedea antipodensis'' breaks into ''Diomedea'' referring to ''Diomedes'', whose companions turned to birds, and ''antipodensis'', the Latin form of the Antipodes Islands, where they are found. Gibson's Albatross
Gibson's Albatross (''Diomedea antipodensis gibsoni''), also known as the Auckland Islands wandering albatross or Gibson's wandering albatross, is a large seabird in the great albatross group of the albatross family. It is found principally in the Auckland Islands archipelago of New Zealand, foraging in the Tasman Sea, with most individuals nesting on Adams Island. The common name and trinomial commemorate John Douglas Gibson, an Australian amateur ornithologist who studied albatrosses off the coast of New South Wales for thirty years. Taxonomy Gibson's albatross was originally described as a subspecies of the wandering albatross with the trinomial name ''Diomedea exulans gibsoni''. Powelliphanta Augusta
''Powelliphanta augusta'' or the Mount Augustus snail, previously provisionally known as ''Powelliphanta'' "Augustus", is a species of large, carnivorous land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Rhytididae. Naturally occurring only on Mount Augustus near Westport on New Zealand's South Island, their entire habitat was destroyed by coal mining. The world population was taken into captivity, in theory until their habitat was restored and they could be released. The mining company concerned went bankrupt and habitat restoration has been unsuccessful, so the species' future is uncertain. Distribution The species is endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. It was found only on the Mount Augustus ridgeline northeast of Westport, which has since been removed by mining operations of the state-owned company Solid Energy. New Zealand Wildlife Service
The New Zealand Wildlife Service was a division of the Department of Internal Affairs responsible for managing wildlife in New Zealand. It was established in 1945 (as the Wildlife Branch) in order to unify wildlife administration and operations that were being carried out by the department. The Conservation Act 1987 established the Department of Conservation. Stockton Mine
Stockton Mine, on the Stockton Coal Field, is New Zealand's largest opencast mining operation. The entrance to the mine is at the former settlement of Stockton. Extent The coal field is situated between 5 and 10 kilometres linear distance south west of Stockton. The southernmost part of the coal field is only 5 km away from the historic mining town of Denniston. The elevation of the coal field varies between 500 and 1100m above sea level. The Stockton coal field dips to the Northeast with approximately the same dip as the Denniston Coal Field, 15 km to the south. Both fields contain Bituminous Hard Coking Coal. The extracted coal is transported from the mine to an aerial ropeway near Stockton. The coal is transported to Ngakawau using this ropeway, doing away with the dangerous railway operation that plagued the Millerton and Denniston Inclines. Powelliphanta
''Powelliphanta'' is a genus of large, air-breathing land snails, pulmonate gastropods in the family Rhytididae, found only in New Zealand. They are carnivorous, eating invertebrates, mostly native earthworms. Often restricted to very small areas of moist forest, they are prey to introduced mammalian predators, and many species are threatened or endangered. Taxonomy ''Powelliphanta'' was originally described by A. C. O'Connor in 1945 as a subgenus of the kauri snails, '' Paryphanta.'' They were named "in recognition of the great service rendered to the study of the family by Mr A. W. B. Powell", and from their similarity to ''Paryphanta''. In 1977 Climo raised ''Powelliphanta'' to genus rank, retaining just two species in ''Paryphanta''. There are at least 21 species and 51 subspecies within the genus.
