Kampong Cham City
Kampong Cham (, Romanization of Khmer#UNGEGN, UNGEGN: ; ) is the capital city of Kampong Cham Province in southeastern Cambodia. It is the 12th largest city in Cambodia with a population of 61,750 people (2021) and is located on the Mekong River. Kampong Cham is 124 kilometers northeast from the national capital Phnom Penh. It takes about 2.5 hours to travel from Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham and vice-versa by boat or a motorized vehicle on asphalt road. The city is connected to the district of Tbong khmum by the Kizuna bridge, the first in Cambodia to span the Mekong. Administrative division The city is subdivided into four districts and 32 villages. Politics The indirect election of the city council in 2014 gave the presidency to Cambodian People's Party, CPP which has won 11 out of the 15 seats in the city council, while CNRP won the rest. Cham (Cham: , Cham Jawi, Jawi: چم, Latin script: Cam) is a Malayo-Polynesian languages, Malayo-Polynesian language of the Austronesian languages, Austronesian family, spoken by the Cham people, Chams of Southeast Asia. It is spoken primarily in the territory of the former Kingdom of Champa, which spanned modern Southern Vietnam, as well as in Cambodia by a significant population which descends from refugees that fled during the decline and fall of Champa. The Western variety is spoken by 220,000 people in Cambodia and 25,000 people in Vietnam. The Chams ( Cham: , چام, ''cam''), or Champa people ( Cham: , اوراڠ چمڤا, ''Urang Campa''; or ; , ), are an Austronesian ethnic group in Southeast Asia and are the original inhabitants of central Vietnam and coastal Cambodia before the arrival of the Cambodians and Vietnamese, during the expansion of the Khmer Empire (802–1431) and the Vietnamese conquest of Champa (11th–19th century). Cambodian People's Party
The Cambodian People's Party (CPP; , UNGEGN: ) is a Cambodian political party which has ruled the country since 1979. Founded in 1951, it was originally known as the Kampuchean People's Revolutionary Party (KPRP). During the Cold War it allied itself with Vietnam and the Soviet Union, in contrast to the pro-Chinese Communist Party of Kampuchea led by Pol Pot. After toppling the Khmer Rouge's Democratic Kampuchea regime with the Vietnamese-backed liberation of Phnom Penh, it became the ruling party of the People's Republic of Kampuchea (1979–1989), which was later renamed the State of Cambodia (1989–1991). Mekong River
The Mekong or Mekong River ( , ) is a transboundary river in East Asia and Southeast Asia.
