Kalpona Akter
Kalpona Akter (born 1976 in Chandpur, Bangladesh, Chandpur, Bangladesh) is a labour activist from Bangladesh. She is the founder and executive director of the Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity and was awarded Human Rights Watch's Alison Des Forges award for Extraordinary Activism in 2016. Career Akter's family moved from Chandpur to Dhaka around 1982, where her father worked as general contractor. In 1988, her father suffered two strokes that left him partially paralysed. Akter, aged 12, left school and started work in a garment factory to support her family. In 1991 or 1992, she met her future husband at her workplace. They married in 1993. In the same year, the management of Akter's factory announced the workers would not receive overtime pay during Eid al-Fitr. Of 1,500 workers, 93 including Akter decided to strike until the bonuses would be paid out again. 2013 Dhaka Garment Factory Collapse
The 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse (also referred to as the 2013 Savar building collapse or the Collapse of Rana Plaza) was a structural failure that occurred on 24 April 2013 in the Savar Upazila of Dhaka District, Bangladesh, where an eight-story commercial building called Rana Plaza collapsed. The search for the dead ended on 13 May 2013 with a death toll of 1,134. Approximately 2,500 injured people were rescued from the building. It is considered the deadliest non-deliberate structural failure accident in modern human history, the deadliest garment-factory disaster in history and the deadliest industrial accident in the history of Bangladesh. The Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) is the Textile industry, garment industry's largest alliance of trade union, labour unions and non-governmental organizations. The civil society campaign focuses on the improvement of working conditions in the garment and Sportswear (activewear), sportswear industries. Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union Centre
The Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union Centre (GWTUC) (, ) is a trade union federation of garment workers in Bangladesh. It is one of the largest trade unions in that sector, with more than 20 factory trade unions affiliated to it. It has enough members to be formally recognised as a trade union, but does not have that status, as is not uncommon for left-oriented unions in Bangladesh. Politically, GWTUC is aligned with the Communist Party of Bangladesh. Context The rate of trade union membership among Bangladeshi garment workers is very low, only around 1.12 percent of the total labour force. Among the reasons for this are restrictive laws on founding unions and trade union centres, together with active intimidation and harassment against union activists.
