Kalisz
Kalisz () is a city in central Poland, and the second-largest city in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, with 97,905 residents (December 2021). It is the capital city of the Kalisz Region. Situated on the Prosna river in the southeastern part of Greater Poland, the city forms a conurbation with the nearby towns of Ostrów Wielkopolski and Nowe Skalmierzyce. Kalisz is one of the oldest cities in Poland and one of the two traditional capitals of Greater Poland (alongside Poznań). It has served as an important regional center in Poland since the Middle Ages as a provincial capital and notable royal city. Greater Poland, often known by its Polish name Wielkopolska (; ), is a Polish Polish historical regions, historical region of west-central Poland. Greater Poland Voivodeship ( ) is a Voivodeships of Poland, voivodeship, or province, in west-central Poland. The province is named after the region called Greater Poland (''Wielkopolska'' ). Kalisz Region () is a historical and ethnographical region in central Poland, located mainly in the Greater Poland Lakes Area and South Greater Poland Plain. It forms the eastern part of the historic region of Greater Poland. Kalisz Region encompasses the area of the former Kalisz Voivodeship (1314–1793), Kalisz Voivodeship, south of Gopło, Lake Gopło as well as Wieluń Land. In the north it borders Kuyavia, in the south it borders Lower Silesia, in the west it borders Poznań Region and in the east it borders with Sieradz Land and Łęczyca Land, Lęczyca Land. Calisia (, ) was a "station" on the so-called "Amber Road", mentioned by Ptolemy, formerly universally identified with Kalisz in Poland. Besides the similarity of the names, the identification was supported by the closeness between the latitude given by Ptolemy (52°50') and the actual latitude of Kalisz (51°45'27"). The Prosna is a river in central Poland, in the Oder river basin. The Prosna is a left tributary of the Warta river (near Pyzdry), with a length of 227 kilometres and a basin area of 4,917 km2 (all in Poland). Until 1918, it marked the westernmost border of the Russian Empire. The towns of Kalisz and Chocz were right on the old frontier.
