Marfa Public Radio is a network of public radio stations serving the Big Bend (Texas), Big Bend region of Far West Texas. Headquartered in Marfa, Texas. The station has been a member of National Public Radio since 2006. Marfa Public Radio broadcasts on four frequencies in the Big Bend–flagship KRTS 93.5 FM broadcasting, FM in Marfa and full-time satellites KRTP 91.7 FM in Alpine, Texas, Alpine, KDKY 91.5 FM in Marathon, Texas, Marathon, and KOJP 95.3 FM in Presidio, Texas, Presidio. KROI
KROI (92.1 FM broadcasting, FM) is a radio station serving the Greater Houston market. It is licensed to Seabrook, Texas and owned by the Spanish Broadcasting System. The station's studios are located in Greenway Plaza and the transmitter is based near Rosharon in unincorporated Brazoria County. The station began as a Top 40 station upon its launch in 1983, but later shifted to beautiful music in 1984, and then classical music in 1986, before its acquisition by Radio One in 2004. Following a short-lived regional Mexican format, KROI became an urban contemporary gospel station in 2006. In October 2011, KROI flipped to an all-news radio format; however, by October 2014, plagued by poor ratings and large financial losses, Radio One flipped KROI to ''Boom 92''—a format focusing on classic hip-hop music. KXWT
KXWT (91.3 FM) is a listener-supported public radio licensed to Odessa, Texas, and is owned and operated by Marfa Public Radio. Until 2012, it was owned and operated by Odessa College. It is the National Public Radio member station for Odessa, Midland and the Permian Basin. KXWT now operates at an assigned frequency of 91.3 MHz with an effective radiated power of 20,000 watts. With the purchase of KXWT by Marfa Public Radio, a new transmitter was built in Gardendale to allow the frequency to boost to Andrews, Crane, and other surrounding areas. The station operated under the branding of West Texas Public Radio until 2018, when its branding was consolidated into Marfa Public Radio. The station is now operated out of Marfa Public Radio's studios in Marfa, but still airs a partially separate schedule from Marfa Public Radio flagship KRTS and its three satellites. Marfa is a city in the high desert of the Trans-Pecos in far West Texas, United States, between the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park, at an elevation of 4685 feet. It is the county seat of Presidio County, Texas, Presidio County. The city was founded in the early 1880s as a water stop. The population of Marfa peaked in the 1930s and as of the 2020 United States Census the population is 1,788.
