Judgment Of Paris (wine)
The Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, also known as the Judgment of Paris, was a wine competition organized in Paris on 24 May 1976 by Steven Spurrier, a British wine merchant and his colleague, Patricia Gallagher, in which French judges carried out two blind tasting comparisons: one of top-quality Chardonnays and another of red wines ( Bordeaux wines from France and Cabernet Sauvignon wines from Napa, California). A Napa wine rated best in each category, which caused surprise as France was generally regarded as being the foremost producer of the world's best wines. Spurrier sold only French wine and believed that the California wines would not win. The event's informal name "Judgment of Paris" is an allusion to the ancient Greek myth. Clos Du Val Winery
Clos du Val Winery is a winery in the Stags Leap District of California's Napa Valley. Wine varieties grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot noir, and Merlot. History The winery was founded by two men who were born into the French wine business, John Goelet and Bernard Portet. After scouting the world for two years to locate areas where they might produce Bordeaux-style wine, Portet identified the then-undiscovered Stag’s Leap district of California’s Napa Valley as especially promising. Goelet bought of vineyard land and established the winery in 1972. The next year he bought in the Los Carneros region to produce the Burgundian varieties Pinot noir and Chardonnay. Château Haut-Brion
Château Haut-Brion () is a French wine, rated a ''Premier Grand Cru Classé'' ( First Great Growth), produced in Pessac just outside the city of Bordeaux. It differs from the other wines on the list in its geographic location in the north of the wine-growing region of Graves. Of the five first growths, it is the only wine with the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is in some sense the ancestor of a classification that remains the benchmark to this day. Spring Mountain Vineyard is a vineyard consisting of 135 different vineyard blocks scattered over the estate in California's Napa Valley. Spring Mountain Vineyard was in fourth place among French and American wines at the historic Judgment of Paris wine competition in 1976. Maison Joseph Drouhin is a French wine producer based in Burgundy that was founded in 1880. The estate owns vineyards in Chablis, the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, as well as in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Beaune wine is produced in the commune of Beaune in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy. The ''appellation d'origine contrôlée'' (AOC) Beaune may be used for red and white wine with respectively Pinot noir and Chardonnay as the main grape variety. The production consists of slightly over 85 percent red wine, and slightly less than 15 percent white wine. Chalone Vineyard
Chalone Vineyard is located in the Chalone AVA south of San Francisco, California, United States, on an unusual geological formation called the Gavilan benchland. The soil is rich in limestone and calcium carbonate and also contains a significant amount of decomposed granite. This soil has a mineral composition similar to the Champagne region of France. Meursault wine is produced in the commune of Meursault in Côte de Beaune of Burgundy. Chateau Montelena is a Napa Valley winery most famous for winning the white wine section of the historic "Judgment of Paris" wine competition.
