Johnny McCarthy (baseball)
John Joseph McCarthy (January 7, 1910 – September 13, 1973) was an American professional baseball first baseman. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for all or parts of 11 seasons for the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants and Boston Braves between and . Born in Chicago, McCarthy threw and batted left-handed, stood tall and weighed . He helped the Giants win the 1937 National League pennant as their regular first baseman. His 65 runs batted in were third on the team. In the 1937 World Series, McCarthy started all five games against the cross-town New York Yankees and collected four hits, including a double, in 19 at bats ( .211). A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The first baseman is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the first baseman is assigned the number 3. Also called first sacker or cornerman, the first baseman is ideally a tall player who throws left-handed and possesses good flexibility and quick reflexes. In baseball statistics, a hit (denoted by H), also called a base hit, is credited to a batter when the batter safely reaches or passes first base after hitting the ball into fair territory with neither the benefit of an error nor a fielder's choice. Scoring a hit To achieve a hit, the batter must reach first base before any fielder can either tag him with the ball, throw to another player protecting the base before the batter reaches it, or tag first base while carrying the ball. In baseball statistics, fielding percentage, also known as fielding average, is a measure that reflects the percentage of times a defensive player properly handles a batted or thrown ball. It is calculated by the sum of putouts and assists, divided by the number of total chances (putouts + assists + errors).
