John Stephenson (MP)
John Stephenson (c. 1709 – 17 April 1794) was a British Member of Parliament. He was the son and heir of Thomas Stephenson of Bails and Crosslands, Alston, Cumbria and a Member of Parliament for various boroughs in the south-west from 1754 to 1755 and 1761 until his death in 1794. Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario). As a lawyer, he was involved in several high-profile cases and quickly became prominent in Kingston, which elected him in 1844 to the legislature of the Province of Canada. By 1857, he had become premier under the colony's unstable political system. Seán Mac Stíofáin (born John Edward Drayton Stephenson; 17 February 1928 – 18 May 2001) was an English-born chief of staff of the Provisional IRA, a position he held between 1969 and 1972. Childhood Although he used the Gaelicised version of name in later life, Mac Stíofáin was born John Edward Drayton Stephenson in Leytonstone, London, in 1928. An only child, his father was an English solicitor's clerk and his mother a Londoner of Ulster Protestant east Belfast descent. He stated his mother had left an impression on him at the age of seven with her instruction: "I'm Irish, therefore you're Irish… Don't forget it." His childhood was marred by his alcoholic father. Lieutenant Colonel John Robin Stephenson (25 February 1931 – ) was a British Army officer and cricket administrator. John Stephenson was born in Sussex and educated at Christ's Hospital. He played in the School Cricket XI alongside J.A. Bailey and D.R.W. Silk in 1948. He was an excellent rugby player, representing Sandhurst, Richmond and Sussex. He also played cricket for Sandhurst and the Army. After passing out from Sandhurst, Stephenson was commissioned into the Royal Sussex Regiment, serving in Egypt, Korea, Gibraltar, Libya, Germany and Northern Ireland. He served as an instructor at the Mons Officer Cadet School (1958–60) and he was the Infantry Representative at the School of Signals (1968–1970). John Atlantic Stephenson (born 18 June 1829) was a Tyneside businessman and poet and amateur artist in the latter half of the 19th century. He was best known for his recitations. Early life Stephenson was born on Waterloo Day, 18 June 1829 in mid-Atlantic. He started work at Sowerby’s Glass Works, manufacturers of fine decorative glass items, at Gateshead and later moved on to a responsible post as representative for John Rogerson and Co. John Stephenson CIE FRS FRSE FRCS (6 February 1871, in Padiham, Lancashire – 2 February 1933, in London) was a surgeon and zoologist. He was a leading expert on the earthworms of the Indian subcontinent and served as editor of the ''Fauna of British India'' series from 1927. Knowledgeable in Persian, Hindustani and some Arabic, he was also an orientalist scholar and translated several works from Persian to English. Life Stephenson was born in Padiham and was education at Burnley Grammar School, matriculated from Owen's College, Manchester and graduated there with a B.Sc. (Lond.) in 1890 and M.B., B.Chir. (Manc.) in 1893. Stephenson was a house physician from 1893 to 1894 at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and then in 1894 at the Royal Hospital for Diseases of the Chest, London. John Stephenson (December 12, 1796 – February 2, 1842) was a Canadian physician and educator, and one of the founders of the Montreal Medical Institution, the first medical school in Canada. He is regarded as one of the founders of McGill University Faculty of Medicine. Early days Stephenson was born on December 12, 1796, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Sir John Frederick Eustace Stephenson (28 March 1910 – 1 November 1998) was an English barrister and judge, a Lord Justice of Appeal from 1971 until his retirement in 1985 and a member of the Privy Council. Chiripula Stephenson
John Edward "Chiripula" Stephenson (born 1873 or 1876) was a figure in the expansion of British colonial control in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia and surrounding areas during the early part of the 20th century. Stephenson was born in northern England and raised along the Tyne. In 1896 he came to Kimberley, South Africa. By 1898 he had gone to Bulawayo, where he became a telegraph clerk. Cecil Rhodes appointed him the joint leader of an expedition into previously unexplored territory. He was accompanied on this trip by 120 porters and his pet baboon. The expedition claimed for the Company large areas of what are now the Zambian copper fields. He eventually left the Company and built his mansion in the remote bush where he became a revered figure by the local community.
