John Leng (politician)
Sir John Leng (10 April 1828 – 13 December 1906) was a newspaper proprietor and Liberal Party politician in Scotland. Life He was born at Hull on 10 April 1828, the younger brother of Sir William Christopher Leng. Educated at Hull Grammar School, he acted there as joint editor with Charles Cooper (later the editor of the ''Scotsman'') of a manuscript school magazine. Becoming assistant teacher at a private school, he sent letters to the ''Hull Advertiser'', which attracted the notice of Edward Francis Collins, then the editor, and led to his appointment in 1847, at the age of 19, as sub-editor and reporter. That post, which embraced dramatic and musical criticism, was held for four years. In July 1851, Leng was selected from among 70 candidates as editor of the then-biweekly ''Dundee Advertiser''. Fife
Fife (, ; gd, Fìobha, ; sco, Fife) is a council area, historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area of Scotland. The Western Cemetery in Dundee, Scotland, is a still-operational cemetery founded in the mid 19th century. It rises northwards from the Perth Road, with terraces in its upper sections. It views over the Firth of Tay to the Tay Rail Bridge and Fife. The Western Cemetery is maintained and managed by Dundee City Council. David Couper Thomson
David Couper Thomson DL (6 August 1861 – 12 October 1954) was a Newspaper proprietor and founder of the newspaper and publishing company D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd in Dundee, Scotland. He was the son of William Thomson, shipowner (18 June 1817 – unknown) and his wife, Margaret Couper. He was raised in Newport-on-Tay, Fife and was later sent to the family shipping business in Glasgow. His father, William Thomson, was a successful draper and later a shipowner, and in 1884 became the major shareholder of the Dundee Courier & Daily Argus. In 1886, at his father's request, David Couper Thomson moved back to Dundee to become the general manager of the paper. The other son, Frederick Thomson (1864–1917), joined the company in 1888. DC Thomson was founded with £60,000 capital. William, David and Frederick had all but four of the company shares which were valued at £10 per share.
