John Lawrence (musician)
John Lawrence (born 17 July 1975) is a Welsh musician. He was a founding member of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, but left the band in 1999, prior to the release of the band's sixth album '' Spanish Dance Troupe''. As a solo artist, he has sometimes gone by the name Infinity Chimps. In early 2011, Lawrence recorded a session for Adam Walton on BBC Introducing, backed by the then-new band Shy and the Fight. In 2013, he released new material in collaboration with singer Jaci Williams. He has also been producing Tree of Wolves's material. Lawrence produced folk musician Chris Jones's debut album, ''Dacw'r Tannau'', released in September 2014. He has also worked with Band Pres Llareggub on their first EP, which was released in April 2015, and with Nia Morgan on her upcoming new album. Lawrence released solo material, ''Songs from the Precipice'', on 7 September 2015 via his website, followed by ''Narcissus Paradox'' in 2019. Welsh ( or ) is a Celtic language of the Brittonic subgroup that is native to the Welsh people. Welsh is spoken natively in Wales, by some in England, and in Y Wladfa (the Welsh colony in Chubut Province, Argentina). Historically, it has also been known in English as "British", "Cambrian", "Cambric" and "Cymric". The Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 gave the Welsh language official status in Wales. Both the Welsh and English languages are ''de jure'' official languages of the Welsh Parliament, the Senedd. Melys
Melys (English translation:"Sweet") are a Welsh independent rock band from Betws-y-Coed in Conwy, Wales, formed in 1996. They sing in both English and Welsh. They have recorded eleven sessions for John Peel on BBC Radio 1, came first in his Festive Fifty in 2001 and won Best Welsh-language Act at the Welsh Music Awards in 2002. History and line-up The group was formed by Andrea Parker (vocals) and Paul Adams (guitar and keyboards) when the two met in Betws-y-Coed in 1996. The two became both musical and personal partners and recruited Adams' brother Gary Husband on drums and their friend Carys Jones on keyboards. After releasing two EP's with local label Ankstmusik the group was signed to Pinnacle Records releasing their first album ''Rumours and Curses'' in 1998. Ankst was a Welsh independent record label formed in 1988 at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth by Alun Llwyd, Gruffudd Jones and Emyr Glyn Williams. After a handful of low key cassette releases, the label relocated to Cardiff and became a more serious concern, providing a launch-pad for several popular Welsh artists, including Llwybr Llaethog, Super Furry Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. The ''Rough Guide to Wales'' described Ankst as "one of the most prolific, eclectic and innovative" of the 1990s Welsh music labels. Between 1988 and 1997, the label put out some 80 releases before splitting in 1997 into two separate companies. Tudno FM was a community radio station serving the area around Llandudno in Conwy County Borough, north Wales, broadcasting on 107.8 FM locally and via the station's website. Tudno FM was owned and operated by Llandudno Community Radio and was a non-profit, non-commercial radio station broadcasting seven days a week. The station's schedule consisted largely of music and talk programming along with national news bulletins, local features, specialist music programming and Welsh language output. Apart from national news bulletins from Sky News Radio in London, all of Tudno FM's output was produced and presented locally. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci were a psychedelic folk and alternative rock band which formed in Carmarthen, Wales, in 1991. The group performed music in both Welsh and English, and they had eight Top 75 singles on the UK Singles Chart during their career. They were prominent during the era known as Cool Cymru. The group disbanded in May 2006. Biography The group was formed by Euros Childs (vocals and keyboards), John Lawrence (vocals and guitar) and Richard James (bass guitar) whilst still at Bro Myrddin Welsh Comprehensive School in Carmarthen. Beyond their main roles in the band, all three were multi-instrumentalists and often swapped around instruments both in the studio and onstage. With Sion Lane (keyboards) and Steffan Cravos (violin) added to the lineup, Gorky's recorded the self-released cassette ''Allumette'' (1991).
