John Armstrong (engineer)
John Armstrong (13 October 1775 – 17 March 1854) was a British civil engineer who worked on a number of canals, bridges and tunnels, mostly in Bristol and London. From 1831 to 1854 he was the City Surveyor for Bristol. Career Armstrong was born in Ingram, Northumberland and, after receiving little formal education, became a millwright's apprentice in Bill Quay. In 1800 he moved to Bath and worked on several projects in the area, including the repairs to Pulteney Bridge and the construction of Bristol Harbour and Westgate Bridge. From 1821 he worked on projects in London and South East England such as Rochester Bridge and Grosvenor Canal. He was briefly the resident engineer for Marc Isambard Brunel's Thames Tunnel project but resigned due to poor health in August 1826, to be replaced by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Marc Isambard Brunel
Sir Marc Isambard Brunel (, ; 25 April 1769 – 12 December 1849) was a French-British engineer who is most famous for the work he did in Britain. He constructed the Thames Tunnel and was the father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Born in France, Brunel fled to the United States during the French Revolution. In 1796, he was appointed Chief Engineer of New York City. He moved to London in 1799, where he married Sophia Kingdom. In addition to the construction of the Thames Tunnel, his work as a mechanical engineer included the design of machinery to automate the production of pulley blocks for the Royal Navy. Brunel preferred the given name Isambard, but is generally known to history as Marc to avoid confusion with his more famous son. St Katharine Docks is a former dock and now a mixed-used district in Central London, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and within the East End. It lies on the north bank of the River Thames, immediately downstream of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. From 1828 to 1968, it was one of the commercial docks that made up the Port of London. Joseph Bramah
Joseph Bramah (13 April 1748 – 9 December 1814), born Stainborough Lane Farm, Stainborough, in Barnsley, Yorkshire, was an English inventor and locksmith. He is best known for having improved the flush toilet and inventing the hydraulic press. Along with William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong, he can be considered one of the two fathers of hydraulic engineering. Early life Joseph Bramah was the second son in the family of Joseph Bramma (note the different spelling of the surname), a farmer, and his wife, Mary Denton. He was educated at the local school in Silkstone and on leaving school he was apprenticed to a local carpenter. On completing his apprenticeship he moved to London, where he started work as a cabinet-maker. In 1783 he married Mary Lawton of Mapplewell, near Barnsley, and the couple set up home in London. The Thames Tunnel is a tunnel beneath the River Thames in London, connecting Rotherhithe and Wapping. Grosvenor Canal
Grosvenor Canal was a canal in the Pimlico area of London, opened in 1824. It was progressively shortened, as first the railways to Victoria Station and then the Ebury Bridge housing estate were built over it. It remained in use until 1995, enabling barges to be loaded with refuse for removal from the city, making it the last canal in London to operate commercially. A small part of it remains within the Grosvenor Waterside development. History In the early eighteenth century, there were marshes and a tidal creek on the north bank of the Thames near Pimlico.
