Joe Comuzzi
Joseph Robert Comuzzi, (April 5, 1933 – December 31, 2021) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as a cabinet minister under Prime Minister Paul Martin. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1988 to 2008, representing Thunder Bay—Nipigon which was renamed Thunder Bay—Superior North in 2000. Early life Comuzzi was born in Fort William, Ontario, on April 5, 1933. He studied at the University of Windsor, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1954. Twelve years later, he received the University of Windsor Alumni Award of Merit, the Alumni Association's most prestigious award. After working in the Thunder Bay business community for 24 years, he went back to his alma mater and obtained his law degree in 1980. He also served as a school representative on the Lakehead Board of Education. In Canada, a party whip is the member of a political party in the House of Commons of Canada, the Senate of Canada or a provincial legislative assembly charged with ensuring party discipline among members of that party's caucus. The whip is also responsible for assigning offices and scheduling speakers from his or her party for various bills, motions and other proceedings in the legislature. Responsibilities A party whip works to ensure that the number of party members in the legislature or at committee meetings is adequate to win a vote if one is called. Dougall Media is a Canadian media company, which has several television, radio and publishing holdings in Northwestern Ontario. Television Dougall Media owns CKPR, a CTV affiliate (formerly a CBC affiliate until August 31, 2014), and CHFD, a Global affiliate, both in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The two stations are what is known as a twinstick operation, and are in fact the sole remaining locally owned twinstick anywhere in English Canada (Stingray Group's twinstick in Lloydminster is not locally owned since Stingray is a national company based in Montreal). The sponsorship scandal, AdScam or Sponsorgate, was a scandal in Canada that came as a result of a federal government " sponsorship program" in the province of Quebec involving the Liberal Party of Canada, which was in power from 1993 to 2006. The program was originally established as an effort to raise awareness of the Government of Canada's contributions to Quebec industries and other activities in order to counter the actions of the Parti Québécois government of the province that worked to promote Quebec independence. The program ran from 1996 until 2004, when broad corruption was discovered in its operations and it was discontinued.
