Jimmy Woods
Jimmy Woods (born October 29, 1934, in St. Louis, Missouri; died March 29, 2018, in Anchorage, Alaska) was an American jazz alto saxophonist. Woods played with the R&B band of Homer Carter in 1951, and served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He played with Roy Milton after his discharge, and was with Horace Tapscott in 1960 and Joe Gordon in 1961. Following this he played with Gerald Wilson (1963) and Chico Hamilton (1964-1965). Woods is remembered primarily for two albums he released on Contemporary Records in the early 1960s. The second of these albums, ''Conflict'', featured Elvin Jones, Harold Land, Carmell Jones, Andrew Hill, and George Tucker. Discography As a leader *'' Awakening!!'' ''The Dealer'' is a 1966 album by jazz drummer/ bandleader Chico Hamilton. It was first released by Impulse! Records (AS-9130) and has been subsequently reissued on CD with the addition of bonus tracks from ''Chic Chic Chico'', ''Definitive Jazz Scene Vol. 3'' and ''Passin' Thru''. The bonus tracks feature different line-ups to that of the album, including Charles Lloyd and Gábor Szabó. The bonus track, "El Toro" is also featured on the ''Impulsive! Unmixed'' compilation. All tracks are originals, composed by Hamilton and some arranged by Jimmy Cheatham. The exceptions are "For Mods Only", composed by free jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp, who features on the track playing piano; some licks played by guitarist, Larry Coryell, from which Mick Taylor (of Bluesbreakers and The Rolling Stones) later used with The Stones; and "Larry of Arabia" by Larry Coryell, here supposedly making his first recording. Impulse! Records (occasionally styled as "¡mpulse! Records" and "¡!") is an American jazz record company and label established by Creed Taylor in 1960. John Coltrane was among Impulse!'s earliest signings. Thanks to consistent sales and positive critiques of his recordings, the label came to be known as "the house that Trane built". History Impulse!'s parent company, ABC-Paramount Records, was established in 1955 as the recording division of the American Broadcasting Company ( ABC). In the 1940s and 1950s, ABC benefitted from the U.S. government's antitrust actions against broadcasters and film studios who were forced to divest parts of their companies.
