Jim Bishop (doctor)
James Frank Bishop is an Australian doctor and the Chief Medical Officer of Australia between 2009 and 2011. Bishop graduated from University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1972. He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and spent three years with the National Institutes of Health in the United States. He later practiced at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne and after founded the Sydney Cancer Centre at Royal Prince Alfred and Concord Hospitals. In his role as Chief Medical Officer, Bishop advised the Australian government on its response to the 2009 swine flu pandemic. As CMO, Bishop also looked to focus on prevention measures relating to diet, obesity and tobacco use. He later became the executive director of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre and the chair of cancer medicine at the University of Melbourne. The Chief Medical Officer is the principal health advisor to the Australian government. The position is a medical appointment, reporting to the Departmental secretary for the Department of Health. The position is responsible for the Office of Health Protection which itself has responsibility for biosecurity, immunisation and disease surveillance. The position is also responsible for "maintaining high-quality relationships between the department, the medical profession, medical colleges, universities and other key stakeholders". Other responsibilities of the position vary according to the skills and background of the officeholder. The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) is a multi-site, multi-disciplinary specialist cancer hospital and research centre located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Quitline
Quitline is a telephone helpline offering treatment for addiction and behavior change/issues. Presently most quitlines treat tobacco or alcohol addiction. Quitlines are treatment centres that offer advanced treatment and should not be confused with call centres. Melanie Wakefield
Melanie Ann Wakefield is an Australian psychologist and behavioural researcher at the Cancer Council of Victoria. She has worked extensively on cancer prevention including tobacco control, through the introduction of plain-paper packaging. Academic career Wakefield has a BA, GradDip in applied psychology, (1981) MA and PhD (1994) from the University of Adelaide. Wakefield has been Director of the Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer at the Cancer Council of Victoria since 2002. Wakefield was a member of the Prevention and Community Health Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council from 2012 to 2015. She is an honorary professor in the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne.
