Jezabeel
Jezabeel (2 November 1992 – 22 September 2015) was a top New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1998 Melbourne Cup. In April 1995, as a 2 year old, she won the listed 1600m Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie. Later that year she went to Flemington but was last of seven in a 3YO fillies race. In December 1997 she was second to Paddy O’Riley in the Manawatu Cup. On New Years Day 1998 she won the Auckland Cup, ridden by then apprentice jockey Opie Bosson, beating Aerosmith by a short neck with North Lady third. Jezabeel is the only horse to have won both the Melbourne Cup and the Auckland Cup. Jezabeel was ridden by Chris Munce in the Melbourne Cup. She and Champagne delivered sweet revenge when fighting out the finish of the Melbourne Cup. The race provided a turn of fortune after both mares had suffered interference-caused by jockey Ray Cochrane on Taufan's Melody in the Caulfield Cup. The Melbourne Cup victory was her last race. The 1998 Melbourne Cup was the 138th running of the Melbourne Cup, a prestigious Australian Thoroughbred horse race. The race, run over , was held on Tuesday, 3 November 1998 at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse. The race was won in 3 mins 18.59s by the New Zealand bred and trained mare Jezabeel ( Zabeel-Passefleur) from another kiwi bred and trained mare, Champagne. Chris Munce
Chris Munce (born 17 May 1969) is a highly successful Thoroughbred horse racing jockey, having won both the Melbourne Cup and the Cox Plate. He is now a highly successful trainer of horses in Brisbane Queensland heading up a family based operation which is most notable for promoting the joy and love of the thoroughbred. Auckland Cup
The Auckland Cup is an annual race held by the Auckland Racing Club (ARC). It is an Open Handicap for thoroughbred racehorses competed on the flat turf over 3200 metres (two miles) at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. The race was formerly graded as a Group One (G1) event but as from 2022 is a Group 2. It was first contested in 1874. History The first meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was in May 1874. Opie Bosson
Owen Patrick Bosson (born 24 July 1980), known by his short name Opie Bosson, is a jockey in Thoroughbred racing in New Zealand. Riding career Bosson started as an apprentice for Stephen Autridge, his godfather. He began his race-day riding career as a 15 year old on the 25 October 1995 with Comette at Dargaville and soon after had his first win on Fairlie Airlie at Gisborne. Zabeel
Zabeel (25 October 1986 – 25 September 2015) was a New Zealand-bred racehorse who predominantly raced in Australia. He was retired to stud and became a champion sire. He is a bay son of Sir Tristram (IRE) from the Nureyev mare Lady Giselle. During his racing career, he won seven races, including the Moonee Valley Stakes in 1989 and the Australian Guineas, the Alister Clark Stakes, and the Craiglee Stakes in 1990. After retiring to stud in 1991, he sired 153 individual stakes winners of 350 stakes races, including Vengeance of Rain, who won the Dubai Sheema Classic and holds the earnings record in Hong Kong. Zabeel has also sired the Australian champions Octagonal and Might And Power, who won 17 Group One races between them, including the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, two Cox Plates, three runnings of the Mercedes Classic, and the Sydney three-year-old triple crown. The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Bay (horse)
Bay is a hair coat color of horses, characterized by a reddish-brown or brown body color with a black point coloration on the mane, tail, ear edges, and lower legs. Bay is one of the most common coat colors in many horse breeds. The black areas of a bay horse's hair coat are called "black points", and without them, a horse is not a bay horse. Black points may sometimes be covered by white markings; however such markings do not alter a horse's classification as "bay". Bay horses have dark skin – except under white markings, where the skin is pink. Genetically, bay occurs when a horse carries both the Agouti gene and a black base coat. Sir Tristram (IRE) (7 April 1971 – 21 May 1997) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who stood at stud in New Zealand, where he sired an extraordinary 45 Group One winners, including three Melbourne Cup winners. His progeny earned him 17 official Leading Australasian sire premierships, plus nine broodmare sire titles. Caulfield Cup
The Caulfield Cup is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held under handicap conditions, although the Melbourne Racing Club is in the process of turning the race into weight for age (WFA) conditions. This is for all horses aged three years old and older. It takes place over a distance of 2400 metres at the Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in mid October. The prize money is A$5,000,000.
