Jewish Labor Committee
The Jewish Labor Committee (JLC) is an American secular Jewish organization dedicated to promoting labor union interests in Jewish communities, and Jewish interests within unions. The organization is headquartered in New York City, with local/regional offices in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles, and volunteer-led affiliated groups in other U.S. communities. It was founded in 1934 in response to the rise of Nazism in Europe. Today, it works to maintain and strengthen the historically strong relationship between the American Jewish community and the trade union movement, and to promote what they see as the shared social justice agenda of both communities. The JLC was also active in Canada from 1936 until the 1970s. The General Jewish Labour Bund in Lithuania, Poland and Russia ( yi, אַלגעמײנער ייִדישער אַרבעטער־בונד אין ליטע, פּױלן און רוסלאַנד , translit=Algemeyner Yidisher Arbeter-bund in Lite, Poyln un Rusland), generally called The Bund ( yi, דער בונד, Der Bund, cognate to german: Bund, ) or the Jewish Labour Bund ( yi, דער יידישער ארבעטער־בונד, Der Yidisher Arbeter-Bund), was a Jewish secularism, secular Jewish Socialism, socialist party initially formed in the Russian Empire and active between 1897 and 1920. In 1917 the Polish part of the Bund, which dated to the times when Poland was a Russian territory, seceded from the Russian Bund and created a new Polish Bund, Polish General Jewish Labour Bund which continued to operate in Poland in the years between the two world wars. Stuart Appelbaum
Stuart Harris Appelbaum (born 1953) is an American trade union leader. Appelbaum has been the president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) since May 1, 1998. He is also president of the Jewish Labor Committee. In February 2022, he was elected board of directors of the National Endowment for Democracy, a U.S. government-funded non-profit. Appelbaum spent his childhood in Hartford, Connecticut. As a youth, he was raised in a Conservative synagogue and was president of his United Synagogue Youth chapter. He attended Camp Ramah. He graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis University and received a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. Adolph Held
Adolph Held (May 16, 1885 – May 14, 1969) was a Galician-born Jewish American newspaper editor, banker, and labor activist. Life Held was born on May 16, 1885 in Boryslav, Austro-Hungarian Empire, the son of Jacob Held and Tauba Yetta Singer. He immigrated to America in 1893. Held attended the College of the City of New York, graduating from there with a B.S. in 1906. From 1907 to 1912, he was the city editor of ''The Jewish Daily Forward'', a leading Yiddish socialist newspaper. From 1912 to 1917, he worked as its business manager. In 1917, he was elected as a Socialist to the New York City Board of Aldermen Fourth District, defeating Democrat Henry S. Schimmel. He ran for re-election in 1919, but he lost to Louis Zeltner, who ran with support from both Republicans and Democrats. Jewish Council For Public Affairs
The Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) is an American Jewish 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization that deals with community relations. It is a coordinating round table organization of 15 other national Jewish organizations, including the Reconstructionist, Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox congregational movements, as well as 125 local Jewish federations and community relations councils. The JCPA describes itself as "the representative voice of the organized American Jewish community." The JCPA was established as the National Community Relations Advisory Council in 1944 by the Council of Jewish Federations, which later became part of the United Jewish Communities, now the Jewish Federations of North America.
