Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2020, the population was 33,147. The county seat is Madison. History Jefferson County was formed on February 1, 1811, from Dearborn and Clark Counties. It was named for Thomas Jefferson, principal draftsman of the Northwest Ordinance and President of the United States from 1801 through 1809. Jefferson County was one of Indiana's first counties, and many important early Hoosiers came from Madison, including William Hendricks. Throughout the early history of the state, Madison was one of the leading cities competing with Vincennes, and later New Albany, to be the largest city in the state. The county fell into economic decline after the American Civil War, as industry began to shift from southern Indiana to the northern part of the state. Switzerland County is a county in the southeast corner of the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 9,737. The county seat is Vevay, one of two incorporated towns in the county. History In 1787, the fledgling United States defined the Northwest Territory, which included the area of present-day Indiana. Smyrna Township is one of ten townships in Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,096 and it contained 466 housing units. Created on June 16, 1847 by the Jefferson County Commissioners, Smyrna was the last of Jefferson County's 10 townships to be formed. It is largely rural with only small unincorporated areas as population centers. No post offices operate in the township. Shelby Township, Jefferson County, Indiana
Shelby Township is one of ten townships in Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,133 and it contained 453 housing units. History The first land acquired by settlers was in 1809 on the northern border with Ripley County. Many early settlers were Scotch-Irish and were prominent in forming the Jefferson Presbyterian Church in 1818. Another early group was what was known as "Low Dutch", families primarily of Dutch origin who had lived in the New Amsterdam settlements in New York and New Jersey and who moved to Kentucky in the early 1780s. They were also involved in the formation of Jefferson Presbyterian, but joined the former Pleasant Presbyterian church in neighboring Switzerland County when it formed in 1829. Republican Township is one of ten townships in Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,599 and it contained 639 housing units. Republican Township was created on March 12, 1817 by the Jefferson County Common Pleas Court. It has had the following post offices, which are no longer in operation: Hargan (June 4, 1884 – July 29, 1898); Ramsey's Mills (Dec. 19, 1832-Jan. 14, 1848); Swanville (June 10, 1847-Oct. 23, 1866) and (Jan. 8, 1867-Jan. 15, 1907). Monroe Township is one of ten townships in Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 374 and it contained 176 housing units. History Monroe was the next-to-last township created by the Jefferson County commissioners. It was carved from Lancaster Township on March 11, 1842. Much of township became part of the former Jefferson Proving Ground and a substantial part of the population relocated. As a result, there are few institutions or businesses remaining. The Hebron Baptist and Liberty Christian Churches are the only churches and there are no schools or post offices in Monroe Township. Milton Township is one of ten townships in Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 896 and it contained 470 housing units. History The township was created by the Jefferson County Court of Common Pleas on May 12, 1818 from Madison Township and Pittsburgh Township. At the time, it also included the southern tier of modern Shelby Township running from an east–west line between sections 33 and 33 Twp. 4N Range 11E to the Switzerland county border. It is an overwhelmingly rural area and the cultivation of Burley tobacco has been a major cash crop since the late 1800s. Milton Township has one incorporated town, Brooksburg, and the unincorporated Manville area.
