Jean Bassange
Jean Bassange was a French painter active in Paris in the 17th century and in the Académie de Saint-Luc. He was only known as a name until he was cited for the first time by Jules Guiffey in 1915. Musée Antoine Vivenel holds his only surviving work, an ''Adoration of the Shepherds'', rediscovered by that museum's curator Éric Blanchegorge - this painting inspired a work by Simon Vouet, later engraved by François Perrier. Guillaume Kazerouni also writes of documents from 1628 to 1654 mentioning the painter. Académie De Saint-Luc
The Académie de Saint-Luc was the guild of painters and sculptors set up in Paris in 1391, and dissolved in 1776.Alfred Fierro (1996). ''Histoire et Dictionnaire de Paris''. Paris: Robert Laffont. It was set up by the Provost of Paris in 1391, along the lines of the Guilds of Saint Luke in other parts of Europe. The Académie de Saint-Luc was successful, as it attracted the artists who did not have access to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. This was particularly the case for women artists. In the 18th-century, there were 130 female members of the Académie de Saint-Luc, many more than at the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, which in 1783 limited its female members to four. In the 1770s, the success of the Académie de Saint-Luc provoked the enmity of the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, which complained to the King and successfully petitioned for the closure of their rival. Musée Antoine Vivenel
The Musée Antoine Vivenel is the municipal museum of the city of Compiègne in northern France, located at 2, rue d'Austerlitz, 60200 Compiègne. It was founded in 1839, following an important gift by Antoine Vivenel, architect and art collector. The museum has one of the largest collections of Greek ceramics in France after the Louvre, some of which come from the collections of Lucien Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother and Prince of Canino, in Italy. The museum also benefits from the deposits of sculpted blocks from the Gallo-Roman temple of Champlieu located about twenty kilometers south-east of the city. The museum also has Egyptian artifacts (including a children's mummy) and artifacts of ancient Etruscans. Simon Vouet
Simon Vouet (; 9 January 1590 – 30 June 1649) was a French painter who studied and rose to prominence in Italy before being summoned by Louis XIII to serve as Premier peintre du Roi in France. He and his studio of artists created religious and mythological paintings, portraits, frescoes, tapestries, and massive decorative schemes for the king and for wealthy patrons, including Richelieu. François Perrier (painter)
François Perrier (1590–1650) was a French painter, draftsman, and printmaker. Perrier was instrumental in introducing into France the grand style of the decorative painters of the Roman Baroque. He is also remembered for his two collections of prints after antique sculptures, the ''Segmenta nobilium signorum et statuarum quae temporis dentem invidium evasere'' (Paris, 1638), and ''Icones et segmenta...quae Romae adhuc extant'' (Paris, 1645). These prints provided visual repertories of classical models for generations of European artists and connoisseurs. Biography Perrier was born in Pontarlier. Jules-Joseph Guiffrey (29 November 1840 – 26 November 1918) was a 19th-century French art historian, a member of the Académie des beaux-arts. Career While studying law (he was graduated in 1861Sophie Mouquin, ÂJules Guiffrey », ''Dictionnaire critique des historiens de l'art'', INHA), he was a student at the École nationale des chartes where he obtained his diploma of archivist paleographer in 1863 with a thesis entitled ''Examen du traité qui réunit le Dauphiné à la France et des négociations qui l’ont précédé et suivi (1349)''. In 1866 he was appointed an archivist of the Emperor's archives then at the Archives nationales in the Legislative and Judicial department, where he did much of his career.
