Charles Allen (April 17, 1827 – January 13, 1913) was an American jurist. Early life and education Allen was born at Greenfield, Massachusetts to Sylvester and Harriet (Ripley) Allen. Allen graduated from Harvard University in 1847 and studied law. He received the degree of LL.D. from Harvard in 1892. Legal career Allen was admitted to the bar in 1850 and practiced law at Greenfield for twelve years, then advanced to state offices, serving as the Massachusetts Attorney General from 1867 to 1872. William Allen (August 5, 1704 – September 6, 1780) was a wealthy merchant, attorney and chief justice of the Province of Pennsylvania, and mayor of Philadelphia during the colonial period. At the time of the American Revolution, Allen was one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in Philadelphia. Stephen Haley Allen (March 19, 1847 – October 26, 1931) was an associate justice of the Kansas Supreme Court from January 9, 1893 to January 9, 1899. Early life, education, and career Born in Sinclairville, Chautauqua County, New York, Allen was educated in the village school,Clark Bell, ed., ''The Medico-legal Journal'', Vol. 18 (1900), p. 74-75. until the end of his formal education in 1862.R. Sir John Campbell Allen (October 1, 1817 – September 27, 1898) was from 1865–1896 a justice of the colonial and then provincial Supreme Court of New Brunswick, serving as Chief Justice of New Brunswick from 1875 to 1896. He was born in Kingsclear Parish, New Brunswick, a grandson of Isaac Allen, a New Brunswick Supreme Court judge. He studied law in the office of John Simcoe Saunders. He was a member of the New Brunswick House of Assembly from 1856 to 1865, Solicitor General in 1856 to 1857, Speaker of the House from 1863 to 1865, and Attorney General in 1865. In 1873, he gave the majority decision of the New Brunswick Supreme Court in Dow v. Black, a significant constitutional law case dealing with the federal-provincial division of powers.
