Jupiter Pictures
Jupiter Pictures ( ta, ஜுபிடர் பிக்ச்சர்ஸ்) was an Indian feature film production company founded in Coimbatore in 1934 by M. Somasundaram (popularly known as "Jupiter Somu") and S.K. Mohideen. Jupiter Pictures was a major production house with 46 releases with 36 films released in Tamil, 5 in Telugu, 2 each in Kannada and Hindi and one joint release in Tamil and Telugu. In the late 40s and early 50s, they operated out of Central Studios in Coimbatore. Following the closure of the studio, they relocated to Chennai and took over Neptune Studio in Adayar which would later become Sathya Studios. In Chennai, the Jupiter Pictures office operated from a leased historic and palatial building in Mylapore known as "Mangala Vilas". A. S. A. Sami directed most of his films with Jupiter Pictures. ''Naam'' () is a 1953 Indian Tamil-language film directed by A. Kasilingam, starring M. G. Ramachandran and V. N. Janaki. It is based on ''Kaadhal Kanneer'', a novel by Kashi. The film was released on 5 March 1953 and failed commercially. Plot Kumaran is the heir to a ''zamindari'' estate, which he learns from his dying mother. However, the will and the related testament are hidden by Malayappan. A doctor Sanjeevi is also interested in the property and wants his daughter to marry Kumaran. Against his wishes, Kumaran is in love with Malayappan's sister Meena. When Meena gets the will, Kumaran suspects her intentions, and leaves the village. In the city, he becomes a boxer. Meanwhile, Malayappan sets Kumaran's house on fire and Kumaran is presumed dead. However, he is saved by Meena. ''Zamindar'' is a 1952 Indian Tamil-language film directed by P. V. Krishnan and written by Jalakantapuram. The film was jointly produced by Jupiter Pictures and Sangeetha Pictures. It stars S. A. Nataraj and Madhuri Devi. The film was commercially unsuccessful. Plot Allikulam is small Zamindari administered by the regent Pandi Thevar, who has plans to usurp it with the sudden and shocking demise of the Zamindar, his villainous brother also plans to usurp the property. These, the regent and the brother are at loggerheads with one trying to outdo the other. The story has many characters, Manmudi, a struggling farmer is man of discipline, even though he has a rough exterior and his sister Meenakshi is a good looking young woman. ''Rani'' () is a 1952 Indian film directed by L. V. Prasad, written by A. S. A. Sami and produced by Jupiter Pictures. The film, a Tamil-Hindi bilingual, stars P. Bhanumathi and S. Balachander. Based on the 1948 American film '' The Loves of Carmen'', it was released on 26 April 1952. Plot A princess Ranjani is tattooed with the royal insignia as part of tradition, and the same night, the child is kidnapped by one of the members of the tattoo gang who brings her up as a gypsy girl renaming her Rani. Unaware of her royal lineage, she grows up hawking things on the street and getting into brawls with no punches pulled. She falls in love with a soldier and the story progresses with twists. ''Kaithi'' () is a 1951 Indian Tamil-language crime thriller film written and directed by S. Balachander for Jupiter Pictures. Balachandar also composed the music, and stars alongside S. A. Natarajan, S. Revathi and V. Meenakshi. Adapted from the American film '' Dark Passage'' (1947), it revolves around a man being wrongfully convicted, and escaping to clear his name. ''Kaithi'' was released on 23 December 1951, and emerged a commercial success. No print of the film, however, is known to survive, making it a lost film. Plot Karunakaran, a generous man, meets Vijayan, a poor unemployed graduate, at the Guindy Race Course and offers a tip-off to help him make money. The bet proves a success, but Vijayan finds Karunakaran killed when attempting to give him the winnings and is framed for the murder. An adaptation of the novel ''Vengeance'' by Marie Corelli and William Shakespeare's play ''Macbeth'', the film was shot simultaneously in Hindi as ''Ek Tha Raja'' (). It stars M. G.
