Judith Christin
Judith Christin is an American operatic mezzo-soprano. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Christin received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana University. For nine years she was artist in residence at Metropolitan State University of Denver. She has sung over one hundred roles during her career. At the Metropolitan Opera she created the role of Susanna in ''The Ghosts of Versailles''; she has sung a variety of other roles at the house in nearly 200 performances since making her debut as Filippyevna in ''Eugene Onegin'' in 1993. She has appeared at San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, and Santa Fe Opera, among other companies. Mezzo-soprano
A mezzo-soprano (, ), or mezzo ( ), is a type of classical music, classical female singing human voice, voice whose vocal range lies between the soprano and the contralto voice types. The mezzo-soprano's vocal range usually extends from the A below middle C to the A two octaves above (i.e. A3–A5 in scientific pitch notation, where middle C = C4; 220–880 Hz). In the lower and upper extremes, some mezzo-sopranos may extend down to the F below middle C (F3, 175 Hz) and as high as "high C" (C6, 1047 Hz). The Los Angeles Opera, originally called the Los Angeles Music Center Opera, is an American opera company in Los Angeles, California. It is the fourth-largest opera company in the United States. The company's home base is the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, part of the Los Angeles Music Center. Iain Hamilton (composer)
Iain Ellis Hamilton (6 June 1922 – 21 July 2000) was a prolific Scottish composer of ten operas, four symphonies, four string quartets and much more. He worked in the United States for twenty years. Career Hamilton was born in Glasgow and educated in London, where he became an apprentice engineer. He remained in that profession for the next seven years, studying music in his spare time. In 1947 he won a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Music for three years, studying composition with William Alwyn and piano with Harold Craxton. Thomas Pasatieri
Thomas Pasatieri (born October 20, 1945) is an American opera composer. Life and career Pasatieri was born in New York City, United States. He began composing at age 10 and, as a teenager, studied with Nadia Boulanger, although his main teachers were Vittorio Giannini and Vincent Persichetti. He entered the Juilliard School at age 16 and eventually became the school's first recipient of a doctoral degree. Pasatieri has taught composition at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. From 1980 through 1984, he held the post of artistic director at Atlanta Opera. He has composed 24 operas, the best known of which is ''The Seagull'', composed in 1972. ''Signor Deluso'' is an opera buffa in one act composed by Thomas Pasatieri. The English-language libretto, written by the composer, is loosely based on Molière's 1660 comedy ''Sganarelle, ou Le Cocu imaginaire'' ("Sganarelle, or The Imaginary Cuckold"). It premiered on 27 July 1974 at the Madeira School auditorium in McLean, Virginia performed by the Wolf Trap Opera Company. It has been subsequently performed many times by various small opera companies in the United States and Europe. Stephen Douglas Burton (born February 24, 1943) is an American composer. Life and career A native of Whittier, California, Whittier, California, Burton received his musical education at the Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied from 1960 to 1962, and Peabody Conservatory, from which he received his master's degree in 1974; he studied further at the Salzburg Mozarteum under Hans Werner Henze. From 1970 until 1974 he was on the faculty of the Catholic University of America; beginning in 1973 he taught at George Mason University, from which he retired in 2006. There he became a professor in 1983; he was named the Heritage Chair in Music in 1996. Jack Hamilton Beeson (July 15, 1921 – June 6, 2010) was an American composer. He was known particularly for his operas, the best known of which are '' Lizzie Borden'', ''Hello Out There!'', and ''The Sweet Bye and Bye''. Early life Born in Muncie, Indiana, Beeson began with music when he started piano lessons with Luella Weimer in 1928, but it was not until 1933 that he began to compose. He decided to become an "opera-composer" after being influenced by Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts. ''Cold Sassy Tree'' is an opera composed by Carlisle Floyd, based on the 1984 novel by Olive Ann Burns. ''Cold Sassy Tree'' was Floyd's tenth opera. It had its world premiere on April 14, 2000, at the Houston Grand Opera, with a production staged by Australian filmmaker Bruce Beresford and conducted by Patrick Summers. The original cast included Dean Peterson, Patricia Racette, Diane Alexander, Beth Clayton, Margaret Lloyd and John McVeigh.
