Josiah Williams Pearce
Josiah Williams "Si" Pearce (January 18, 1850 – May 25, 1938) was a merchant and politician in Ontario, Canada. He represented Hastings North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1902 to 1911 as a Conservative member. The son of Peter Pearce and Almira Edmonds, he was born in Norwood, Canada West, and was educated there. Pearce began working as a clerk in a general store there, later moving to Marmora, where he opened his own business. He served as reeve for Marmora from 1890 to 1893 and from 1895 to 1902, and was warden for Hastings County in 1901. He was also secretary-treasurer for the Pearce Lumber Company. Pearce built the first retail mall in Marmora which included a bakery, a livery store and the town newspaper office. Pearce was married three times: first to Bessie Bramley in 1877, then to Julia C. Sir James Whitney School For The Deaf
The Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf is a provincial school in Belleville, Ontario with residential and day programs serving elementary and secondary deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Along with three (ECD and Robarts School for the Deaf) other provincial schools for the deaf in Ontario, it is operated by the Ministry of Education (Ontario) under Education Act of Ontario section 13 (1). Teachers are both deaf and hearing. Deaf student population is approximately 50 students in the senior school and 60 in the elementary school; total is 90 students. Deaf students from Canada often attend Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. and Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York for post-secondary programs. Marmora is the largest community in the Municipality of Marmora and Lake in Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the Crowe River and along Highway 7 between Havelock to the west and Madoc to the east, about the halfway point between Ottawa and Toronto. History The rich history of Marmora Township is the story of mining in Eastern Ontario. Since 1820 this Township has played a leading role in the development of iron mining. In addition, copper, lead, silver, gold and lithographic limestone have been extracted. Iron mining was an important industry in the area during the 19th century. The Province of Canada (or the United Province of Canada or the United Canadas) was a British colony in North America from 1841 to 1867.
