Jon Thares Davidann
Jon Thares Davidann is a U.S.-East Asian historian specializing in intellectual history. He is professor and Chair of Department of History, Humanities and International Studies at Hawaii Pacific University, Hawai'i Pacific University. Career He began his career at Hawai'i Pacific University in 1997. He also served as the Director of Exchange and Study Abroad Programs at HPU for five years from 2007–2012. His residence in the multicultural milieu of Hawai'i and many travels to East Asia convinced him that traditional narratives of westernization were Eurocentric and mistaken. As a result, in 2019, he published ''The Limits of Westernization: American and East Asian Intellectuals Create Modernity, 1860–1960'', an extended critique of westernization. The work won the Kenneth Baldridge Prize in 2020. Davidann published the essay "The Myth of Westernization" in ''Aeon'' Magazine in 2021. Davidann has published six books and 30 articles and essays. Intellectual History
Intellectual history (also the history of ideas) is the study of the history of human thought and of intellectuals, people who conceptualization, conceptualize, discuss, write about, and concern themselves with ideas. The investigative premise of intellectual history is that ideas do not develop in isolation from the thinkers who conceptualize and apply those ideas; thus the intellectual historian studies ideas in two contexts: (i) as abstract propositions for critical application; and (ii) in concrete terms of culture, life, and history. As a field of intellectual enquiry, the history of ideas emerged from the European disciplines of ''Kulturgeschichte'' (Cultural History) and ''Geistesgeschichte'' (Intellectual History) from which historians might develop a global intellectual history that shows the parallels and the interrelations in the history of critical thinking in every society. Hawaii Pacific University
Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) is a private university in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. Oceanic Institute of HPU, an aquaculture research facility, is located at Makapuu Point. HPU is also present on military installations on the island of Oahu. History HPU was founded in 1965 as Hawaii Pacific College by Paul C.T. Loo, Eureka Forbes, Elizabeth W. Kellerman, and Reverend Edmond Walker. Wanting a private liberal arts college in Honolulu, the four applied for a charter of incorporation for a not-for-profit corporation to be called Hawaii Pacific College. The state of Hawaii granted a charter of incorporation to Hawaii Pacific on September 17, 1965. In September 1966, Honolulu Christian College established in 1949 merged into Hawaii Pacific College, and a new charter was granted by the state of Hawaii. In 1967, James L. A year is a unit of time based on how long it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun. In scientific use, the tropical year (approximately 365 solar days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, 45 seconds) and the sidereal year (about 20 minutes longer) are more exact.
