Jon Craig (architect)
Jon Alastair Craig ( – 16 August 2015) was a New Zealand architect. Born in about 1942, Craig was the son of Rawinia Zena (née Wortley) and James Thomas Craig, an architect. In 1969 Craig entered into partnership with his father and Gordon Moller, to form the firm Craig Craig Moller. It became one of New Zealand's leading architectural practices, establishing its reputation initially with residential houses, and later designing larger-scale commercial and public buildings. Craig's own home, which he built in Pinehaven in 1967 and gradually expanded and renovated over many years, was dubbed the "house in the trees" and won an NZIA national award in 1990. Between 1994 and 1999, Craig was the lead architect for the new terminal development at Wellington International Airport. Craig retired from architectural practice in 2008, but continued his interest in the built environment as a trustee of the Wellington Sculpture Trust. Lower Hutt
Lower Hutt ( mi, Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai) is a city in the Wellington Region of New Zealand. Administered by the Hutt City Council, it is one of the four cities that constitute the Wellington metropolitan area. It is New Zealand's sixth most populous city, with a population of . The total area administered by the council is around the lower half of the Hutt Valley and along the eastern shores of Wellington Harbour, of which is urban. It is separated from the city of Wellington by the harbour, and from Upper Hutt by the Taita Gorge. Lower Hutt is unique among New Zealand cities, as the name of the council does not match the name of the city it governs. Special legislation has since 1991 given the council the name "Hutt City Council", while the name of the place itself remains "Lower Hutt City". An architect is a person who plans, designs and oversees the construction of buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings that have human occupancy or use as their principal purpose. Etymologically, the term architect derives from the Latin ''architectus'', which derives from the Greek (''arkhi-'', chief + ''tekton'', builder), i.e., chief builder. The professional requirements for architects vary from place to place. Pinehaven
Pinehaven is a suburb of Upper Hutt City in the lower North Island of New Zealand, established in 1927. It is at the southern end of the city, within the pine covered hills east of Silverstream. Pinehaven is a valley centred on a large reserve and area of native bush. Clustered around the reserve are a number of community facilities. History The hills of Pinehaven were first planted with their trademark pine trees in 1928 by Sir Francis Chichester and Mr G.D.M Goodwin. Most of the streets in Pinehaven are named after members of their families, Wyndham (Road) was Goodwin's son, Jocelyn (Crescent) his daughter and Elmslie (Road) his mother's maiden name. Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) is a membership-based professional organisation that represents 90 per cent of all registered architects in New Zealand, and promotes architecture that enhances the New Zealand living environment. Wellington International Airport (formerly known as Rongotai Airport) is an international airport located in the suburb of Rongotai in Wellington. It lies 3 NM or 5.5 km south-east from the city centre. It is a hub for Air New Zealand and Sounds Air. Wellington International Airport Limited, a joint venture between Infratil and the Wellington City Council, operates the airport. Wellington is the second busiest airport in New Zealand after Auckland, handling a total of 3,455,858 passengers in the year ending June 2022.
