John Wamsley
John Wamsley (born 1938) is an Australian environmentalist. He was the Prime Minister's Environmentalist of the Year for 2003. Wamsley is known for his attempt to set up a network of wildlife sanctuaries across Australia. Wamsley was born in Ourimbah, New South Wales in 1938. His passion for Australian wildlife was born when the seven-year-old Wamsley's family moved to a 67 hectare bushland block at Niagara Park. At age sixteen Wamsley became a trainee metallurgist with BHP. Dissatisfied with the job he became a labourer at BHP's Newcastle Steelworks and worked a second job renovating run down houses. By age 23 Wamsley was a millionaire. Approximately two years later Wamsley enrolled at the University of Newcastle. The thirty-year-old Wamsley graduated with a PhD in Mathematics and moved to Flinders University to lecture. Warrawong Sanctuary
Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary, formerly Warrawong Sanctuary, is a wildlife reserve in the Australian state of South Australia located in the suburb of Mylor about south-east of the centre of the state capital of Adelaide. History The land was established as Warrawong Sanctuary by John Wamsley to conserve endangered Australian wildlife. He purchased the first , a degraded dairy farm, in 1969, with later added. Wamsley eradicated all feral plants and animals (including foxes, which are predators of platypus) from the sanctuary and erected a surrounding fence to preserve the sanctuary's feral-free state, completed in 1982. Nature conservation is the ethic/moral philosophy and conservation movement focused on protecting species from extinction, maintaining and restoring habitats, enhancing ecosystem services, and protecting biological diversity. A range of values underlie conservation, which can be guided by biocentrism, anthropocentrism, ecocentrism, and sentientism, environmental ideologies that inform ecocultural practices and identities. Australian Wildlife Conservancy
The Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is an independent Australian nonprofit organisation, working to conserve threatened wildlife and ecosystems in Australia. AWC is the largest private owner and manager of land for conservation in Australia, currently managing 31 sanctuaries and partnership sites for wildlife conservation that cover over 6.5 million hectares of land across Australia. It partners with governmental agencies, Indigenous groups, and private landholders to manage landscapes for effective conservation. Mount Rothwell Biodiversity Interpretation Centre
Mount Rothwell Biodiversity Interpretation Centre is the largest feral-predator-free ecosystem in Victoria, Australia. It is located just north of the You Yangs, near the town of Little River. The fenced 420-hectare site protects a large number of threatened species.
